Best Rock Guitar Player ever

This is a request for all the people who knows something about music, whos the best Guitarist??
this isnt "whos the fastest", or "whos the most innovator", this is "who is the most complete", so please think in other things apart speed, like composition, melodies, technics, etc.

So here is my top 10

3. Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne)
4. Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)
5. Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)

9. John Petrucci (Dream Theather, also performed with G3)
10. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)

frankly i know sod all about classic rock so my list would include "soundcraft" that is players which are not especially extraordinary raw skill-wise but know how to make awesome guitar noise non the less due to modern magic.

i'll not list them cause i'll get laughed at by the viking monster metallers on here

The four guitarists who I really admire, in no particular order are:

Jimmy Page = Such a range. Wrote Stairway, Kashmir, Heartbreaker, Dazed and Confused...that list could go on for ever...Nuff said. Probably the best, gets overlooked in favour of Jimi Hendrix a lot for best ever, but whereas Jimi Hendrix merely invented guitar virtuosity, Page defined it.

Eddie Van Halen = Of all the technical maestros, the one who cared most about music. Love Cathedral and Eruption, truly awe-inspiring.

Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) = No technical genius, but really distinctive style. Epically heavy but with a light touch, did things with guitar that nobody else did. Great sense of humour too. Soundgarden were great when Kim wrote the music, they started sucking when Cornell started writing the music as well as the lyrics.

Joey Santiago (The Pixies) = Also really original with unusual techniques. Great ear for strange melodies.

//Edit: no post on my fave guitarists should omit Johnny Fean, Horslips guitarist. The original Celtic Rock guitarist, he could play some mean riffs!

@loque: feel free to post the musicians you like, theres no problem Angus young wasnt so wonderful but he defend AC/DC very well.

I want to agree another 2 players: Satriani and Steve Vai. They can do nice melodies, and they are (#&Q/$# fast!! With John Petrucci in G3 they performed... 40.8 notes per second!!!!!!

Love Santana too, did you hear his version of "Black Magic Woman"?? Its wonderful

I'd say Robert Johnson for inventing modern blues, basically; Chuck Berry, for making rock mainstream; Jimi Hendrix, for bringing magic to guitar playing; Eric Clapton, for being an inspiration for nearly every guitarrist after him; Santana, for putting latin america on the map; Stevie Ray Vaughan (my personal favourite), for reviving the blues and taking Jimi songs one step further; more recently, Tom Morello for doing unthinkable sounds with his guitar; and (that's where I get flamed =P) John Mayer, for combining great songwriting with very awesome blues playing and a nice voice for a change.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Jimmy Page and Van Halen, for being revolutionary and for kicking ass :P

How did Jack White make that list? Clearly written by 14 year olds or something.

Suprised there arent more Satriani fans, for instance 'Always With Me, Always With You' is a classic, he says more with the guitar than most could do with words.

Slash aswell, one of my favourites, wrote countless classic riffs, 'Sweet Child of Mine' and 'Slither' are probably my favourites.

And best of all Tom Morello, does things no one else could do on the guitar, just so different, and always with such a groove. 'Killing In The Name' and 'Guerrilla Radio' are just brilliant.

Kurt Cobain, no.12??? Eddie Van Halen no.70??? ...This list DEFINITELY WASN't based upon the abilities. Had it been this way, I (a guitarist with nine-year experience) would have gotten to the top 10

Personally, I simply admire Slash. Maybe he isn't the fastest, the most gifted guitarist but he just rocks me down when I hear him play and I think he is one of the few who can combine speed with feeling.

Number two on my personal list goes to Stevie Ray Vaughan for his bluesy style

Number three for a Polish blues guitarist - Jerzy Styczynski from a Polish blues band called "Dzem". He can play great licks which carve deep lines in a memory.

Number four for Jimi Hendrix for...well...being himself.

Number five for Steve Morse. He's an awesome guy.

That list caused woeful controversy. They tried to justify Kurt being up so high for creating weird, distinctive sounds from his guitar playing, but if they were taking it from that angle they should have had Thurston Moore higher than him. In fairness, at least it wasn't wholly based on technical ability, in which case the list would be filled with shredders who can tap at 100 times per second, but with no real idea why.

Good to see Steve Howe getting consistently mentioned, big fan of Howe-era Yes.

My personal favourites are brian may, jimi hendrix, Kirk Hammett, jimmy page, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton and David Gilmour.

I love blues too though, Robert Johnson, Muddy waters, B.B. King, Freddy King and Kent Ducahine.
