Pretty much, you could buy a an anti-static wrist bad like i have that earths you to the computer case.

Just rubbing your hands against a radiator will get rid of any static though and dont put any components on carpet :)

Sorry to continually pick your guy's brains - I just want to be 100% sure what I'm getting will work. Will a 460W PSU power a Phenom II and HD4850?

Saw this on eBuyer, looks pretty good value: [www.ebuyer.com]

It should do, its only 40 less than the other PSU and it's a better make.

Best thing is to ask Gav he will know a bit more than me :)

Right, I'm ready to order now. I've got it down to £700 inc. monitor

the only component I'm slightly concerned about is the Motherboard: [www.scan.co.uk]

I guess my only source of concern is that it cant be upgraded easily and I'm planning on using this system for at least 3/4 years. The motherboard should serve my Phenom 920 fine over that period, right??

Yeah I did a few googles and a couple of people have got a HD4850 working with the PSU no problem so I'll go for it :)

It will serve fine no problem, i myself have a mobo like that (apart from it's the 770 chipset below) and i will be able to upgrade a few time's yet :)

Only real upgrade is a DDR 3 memory mobo and they cost too much for my liking - memory and mobo!

Yeah I noticed that too! I just saw a few others which had more slots and had Crossfire and stuff like that. Wasn't sure if it was worth the extra money for some future expansion. I guess one HD4850 should be enough for now!

Now for the hard part, parting with the cash...

For what you will be using it for i don't think crossfire is worth it imho.

There's not alot of game's around that even support crossfire yet and even with some that do the performance gain is only minor :)

Yeah that's what I heard. No point in investing heavy amounts into undeveloped technology. I have in fact changed the Mobo I was going to get to a standad Asus M3A78. I noticed the one I had already was a Micro ATX. I figure for £2 the couple of extra expansion slots was worth it :P

Yea ATX is the way to go unless you need a very small pc :)

Few tips? Give yourself time :) . Start in the morning and then you have the entire day to do things, and a bit of time for a break and to chill if things start getting frustrating. You won't get everything done in that one day though, just assemble the pc and once you know it switches on and everything is connected then take a big break. If there's enough time left then set up windows and your basic settings but don't rush things! If it takes a few days, so what? It's better than making a foolish mistake and just getting annoyed ;)

Also, keep a note of where everything is. No doubt there'll be spare screws floating around and cables for this and that. Keep stuff in it's boxes until you need to use it, and if you've finished with something then put it to one side. The last thing you need is clutter to confuse you.

Any questions at all then just come on here and ask away. We're not all experts lol, but we do roughly know what we're doing and most of us will have been where you are now :) .

Well, my first boot was a fail. All the fans powered up, and the LED on the motherboard/graphics card lit up (presumably the ones that are indicating power) but no sign of any BIOS. Grrr... i'm not sure if it's a hardware problem, a connection problem or what right now....

Double check everything is connected for the minute.

Do's your case have a speaker? If so were there any beeps?

Well... I've connected the speaker to the speaker slot on the motherboard. No beeps what-so-ever.

My HDD has no power cable - would that prevent anything happening at start up? I'm a bit confused as to why there's no power cable for it....

You mean there is no power cable from the PSU to the HDD?

If so the System should still boot up, it just won't recognise the HDD as you need the power cable for it to work.

Hmm that explains only why the HDD light wasn't lighting up on my Case, not the whole non-bios thing.

I went through my manual and these were the thinsg I didn't connect because I didn't know or recognise the cable/port:

- Clear RTC RAM jumper
- USB device wake-up jumper
- keyboard power jumper
- Floppy disc connector
- chassis intrusion connector
- IDE connectors (I dont have any IDE components)
- digital audio connector
- optical drive audio in connector
- serial port connector
- front panel audio connector
- HDD power cable

Might sound daft, but is the monitor actually connected?

I *think* so. The connection isn't perfect on the back of the motherboard. But the monitor reacts when I turn on the PC so it must be connected.

I've removed all non-essential parts, like graphics card and optical drive, so I'm basically running off the CPU, mobo and onboard graphics. No BIOS yet... :-\
