Anyone come across this site?

A friend was telling me about a website where he zoomed right in on a leaf to microscopic level and then could zoom right out into the universe. Only problem is he can't remember the link. If you know it, post it, sounds interesting. :-)

There are a few things like this... I know of another one similar. Ill try look :)!

it was like this ..

Its when you see things like that you realize how small we are.

Im not sure on the exact figure, but nearest galaxy to ours andromada or whatever it is moving something like 700miles/s closer to us and yet it is still nothing. i tihnk its 700miles/s lol!

700 miles per second is nothing since it's 25 million light years away, the speed of light being 3x10^8 m/s or 6.7x10^8 mph.

Even though the galaxy is supposed to be suffering a reversal from the Big Bang (fairly sure nobody has worked out how yet unless there is some massive universal centre with an infinite gravitational field - unlikely) I'm sure life on earth will be utterly extinct before everything condenses into near nothingness again.

My point exactly ;-)!

To us, we cant even understand that kind of speed... to us its such a high number its imaginable but its happening.

Well put it in terms of the speed light takes to get from the sun to earth, 8 minutes to travel an average distance of 149 million kilometres (the orbit of earth is elliptical). Or 1 if you put it in astronomical units.

What's really great is everytime you look out into space and spy a Nebula or Andromeda on a clear night you're technically looking back in time as the light that we see from Andromeda is millions of years old.

if your interested in such things these sites could also be interesting. not all articles are provided in english but nontheless it´s worth the visit.

wow, never thought of it like that... Isnt that why they said the hubble telescope can technically look back in time then I guess?

Space is fun. The other day googling I came across some awesome shuttle launch pictures!

edit - ill have a look at the link thanks :)!

Essentially whenever you look at a region of space you see it as it was when the light was emitted / reflected off the surface of the planet / galaxy / star etc. We only see the moon due to reflection from the Sun and other cosmic rays (which is why it turns brown when there is a lunar eclipse).

The further you look into space the further back in time you look. If you go on Hubble's website there are plenty of stories about "new stars forming" in nebular masses, in the article you'll most likely find that they have said how long ago this happened as scientists know the speed of light to an incredibly accurate degree so you can work out how long ago something happened as we see it now quite easily.

I can't open the link to the universe/leaf thing, it says there's an error :(

I can barely comprehend that. I know it's cliche, but it just shows how insignificant we really are.

And there are people dim witted enough to believe that we're the only intelligent life forms in the universe.

lol.

Is reversal the thing where the universe is actually expanding now at a greater rate than ever? And no-one knows why.

I'm absolutely fascinated by this, its just a shame A-level physics barely touches on the subject, but I would guess its because much in space cant be scientific fact as we arent sure what happens. But it would be a hell of a lot more interesting than resultant forces.

Its the most common talked about point but i always find it amazing to think where does it end the universe, how can something not have a end. Boggles the mind that ;)

Pretty much, before scientists "discovered" (more like stumbled across) dark matter there were two theories as to what would happen to the universe: either the mass density of the universe was greater than the critical mass, at which point the universe would collapse having reached a "maximum" size, ending in the same way the universe started, or if the density were below the critical mass the universe would continually expand, slowing down over time but not stopping.

However, now we know that dark matter exists nobody is quite sure what will happen. There are several potential outcomes, perhaps the universe will continue to accelerate until the universe essentially tears itself apart, heat death and several other theories.

It is entirely possible (as I said before) that while the universe expands it could contract again. This does seem unlikely given that dark matter exists in the universe but to be fair when you don't really know what's going to happen any theory could hold ;)

Does seem most likely that the universe will continue to accelerate, given this condition it seems that heat death would be the most likely. As the universe expands everything else has to as well. The space in between galaxies stretches cooling the universe down so eventually everything just destroys itself.

hawking explains it that way: imagine you´re a person living on a ball but you could only see, feel in 2D. there´s left/right and forward/backward but no height. one day you want to do a journey to the end of your world. you start walking in a straight line and once you arrive where you started (cause it´s a ball). because you only know 2 dimensions you can´t understand that.

it´s the same for us: some theories propose at least 17 dimensions. we only experience 4 (if you add the time). so it´s likely that you wont ever reach an end if your travelling across the universe but for sure there is an end. interesting question is: whats outside? (perhaps someone has to jump into a black hole to find out, like homer simpson getting into the real world in an episode ;) )

Well if you jump into a black hole you'll promptly be condensed into nothing and destroyed :P
