Dutch were first every were, but they had ways of selling all nice places, like New York and Australia etc, and all that;s left is Suriname and some islands full of drugs and lazy people.

But i'll eat some kangaroo to celebrate Australia.

you might think she was hot if you saw her, she turned 18 last September. she'll be going to Curtin uni next month or whenever term starts again.

Just to clear certain misconceptions up....

26th January 1788 is when Arthur Phillip landed at Sydney Cove and established 'modern' Australia.

Cook sailed up the east coast of Oz some 18 years earlier having already sailed around and charted NZ. Cook 'claimed' the land and raised the Union jack over what he named New South Wales at Possession Island which is in the Torres Strait, named after a Portugese guy who sailed through there several years earlier.

The Dutch and Portugese had been getting shipwrecked and landing up the western and southern coastlines of Australia for close to two hundred years prior to this but as was said earlier, didn't find what they were looking for eg untold wealth and a population ripe to be coverted to Christianity.

Interestingly, just days after Phillip established Sydney around what today is known as Circular Quay, two French ships sailed over the horizon and into Botany Bay so if the Dutch, Portugese and English couldn't have been bothered, us Aussies could well have been French. Now that's a scary thought ;)

And yes the colony was originally a penal settlement, but so were some of the colonies in the US, and we export our most dastardly back to the UK with our soapie stars doing Xmas pantos each year :)

I'd say you would have loved to speak Portuguese, but the Portuguese from Portugal sounds funny, and especially bad for women and except for Brazil, apparently, all the other colonies have the same issue, so never mind you loving Portuguese ;)

Yeah, but then you'd be a cheese eating surrender monkey as well as just plain being "French", which in my experience is never a good thing.

I've met enough of them to know I don't want to be one!

Australia > France. Although most things > France.
