Celebrating the 25th of another month closer to your winter is a poor effort! ;)

Call it Burns Night. ;-)

Everyone knows that million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10; indeed, it's a common requirement in fairy tales. If the human didn't have to overcome huge odds, what would be the point? Terry Pratchett - The Science Of Discworld

my cousin who lives in Bunbury (Western Australia) has come over for a holiday before she goes back and starts university. one of her friends back home rang up yesterday and they chatted about it a bit.

she then told me it was Australia Day, and explained it's celebrating when Captain Cooke discovered the country, or something.

she was born in Ireland though, so maybe her history of Australia is not all that.

In true Australian style I spent Australia Day at the pub, drinking a large quantity of beer and watching the cricket. Awesome.

Apparently this Aussie day thing caused quite a stir here at our student union... there was a night dedicated to it on friday.

You'll be amazed at the amount of Aussies that don't know that. Many a time I've seen claims that Cook discovered Australia, when in fact the Dutch were there around 170 years before the British ever did.
