Anyone who saw the Panorama show on BBC1 on Monday night will know exactly what these people are capable of. (If you didn't is available online at [news.bbc.co.uk] ) So I decided to see if they were really above all critisism. This is the first email I sent off to them.

You are all nothing more that a bunch of evil people who like to call themselves a religion.

The way you harassed the BBC journalist last night was nothing short of deplorable and the very notion that you think your "cult" is above criticism is lunacy.

I doubt I'll get a reply because I've mentioned the word CULT in this email and as we saw last night, you seem to take offence to that, strange eh?

Now, I wasn't really expecting an email back from them, but today. I did, with a biting incisive comment that really hit me hard and made me question my faith!

So, she's trying to "groom me" into another religion! My reply was:

What exactly does that have to do with my email?

So we shall see, if she going to try and put me on the path to enlightenment, Am I going to be followed by an annoying American who interrupts any Interview I have with people?

You're so getting roped in dude. Beware. BEWARE.

And no I didn't see it. Probably for the best given that you having watched it and fallen into the trap of daring to make contact with one of them, and will soon become a... scientologist.

yes i watched it, and considered starting a thread about the cult in general to see what forum members' opinions were, but thought we might get raided by one of them and it might cause problems if they somehow saw the thread.

as you might know, i'm against all religion, so something like this is just plain laughable IMO. the creator (L. Ron Hubbard, L standing for Lafayette or something)) was a sci-fi writer and even was quoted as saying "the best way to make money is to invent your own religion", then a few years later, scientology was born.

the best thing i've seen to sum it up is this vidoe form zipperfish: Click

it's sort of comincal and understandable that it can be accepted in the USA as a religion, yo know crazy americans and all that, but now it's coming here too, it seems no-one is preparing to question it and stand up against it, the Chief of the Met. Police even gave a welcoming speech at the opening of their London branch, saying that it's welcome because it might steer people away from crime or whatever.

i mean come on, aliens coming to earth and living in volcanoes, being blown up and then their souls living inside human beings of today? how can anyone even consider for a second that this is true and then actually join the organisation who told you this?

Careful they might hypnotise you into paying £1000 to reach level 2 of the faith or something stupid like that.

Mark, spot on the money with that reply. What does it have to do with your e-mail? Nothing!

Scientology rules. I can only ask ALL of you to sign in immediately and hand over all your money to that CHURCH. Much healthier than spending your cash on drugs or filthy prostitutes and probably more enjoyable than getting your eyes poked out with a red hot spear.

Here we go, actually, a decent length reply from them, fair play:

Mark,

Gives you another side to look at.

Imagine this conversation with an "unbiased," "fair" reporter:

You say, "when I eat breakfast I am no longer hungry."

The BBC response is "so you allege."

And the BBC says it again and again, to you, your friends, everyone you
know who is in favor of breakfast.

But the anti-breakfast people interviewed are never challenged when they
say, "Breakfast is horrible, and really people who eat breakfast are
brainwashed and mind controlled into believing it makes them less hungry."

The BBC reporter says, "oh, that's so interesting"

But BBC doesn't show that in their piece.

They show, after this kind of challenging questioning of the
pro-breakfast person and his friend for days, that person getting
slightly tcked off and walking away.

(And it turns the anti-breakfast person hasn't eaten breakfast in 20
years, as he gets up at noon every day, so starts the day with lunch.
The BBC doesn't mention that in their piece either.)

Ask her why she is making subtle digs at people that get up at noon every day, and that surely and respectable religion teaches you not to judge people in this way?

No c'mon, it's a fair response. The firs e-mail was a bit nose-in-air, but the second one at least seems to be prepared to offer some middle ground. I'm not suggesting you take it, but it DOES at least show some humility.

At best this is a waste of time. You are playing with fire, and it is absolutely sure that you cannot win this one.

I used to have some Jehova Witnesses people coming to my place to talk about God/religion and so forth. While I seriously do not mind talking about those issues, and I respect their wish to live as they see fit, I also knew who they are, because there was a large community of them, where I grew up.

A mature woman and her young apprentice would come about once a week and talk with me for an hour or two. As an intellectual challenge, I thought I would play their own game on them, and challenge their reasoning and perception of themselves... I actually came to they point were they had to admit that they approved of genocide, despite their pride of being among those that resisted the Nazi regime during WWII and being sent to death camps for their beliefs.

It was a no go. The young apprentice was replaced for the next visit, and they just kept on coming like nothing had happened... 110% resistant to any sort of argument whatsoever. You can wear down one of them, but they will just replace that person, and in a battle of numbers and patience, trust me, they have more.

You will find yourself entangled, because you have invested time, energy and effort in presenting interesting strategems and lines of thought. You will be unwilling to extract yourself, because it will be difficult to write this exercise off as a total loss, and they won't terminate the communication unless you reject them flatout. This where you are vulnerable, and that very process is how cults and sects recruit new members.

It's only after we've lost everything, that we are free to do anything.

How very true.
Better change your isp and get a new email addy, before they come for you. ;-) And somewhat ironic in a dark sort of way, is the site-ad, The Dark History of the Church, 7 great myths of organised religion. etc.

On the subject of Jehovah's Witnesses, my father about 12 years ago was getting very angry at being woken up at 9am on a Sunday morning when he's trying to sleep because he worked long hours during the week. He said if you come round again I'll sue you. They came around the next weekend, and he promptly rang up the "head office" for the Jehovah's Witnesses, and said something along the lines of "Your people keep coming round to my house even though I don't want them to, I've said I'm not interested, and have said I'll sue them if they do it again." Their response: nothing. They've not bothered him since however. :)
