I am currently reading a book called De Familie Stastok for school...

It's a book from 1800 or something and I have to read it in THAT version, with the sucky old language. It's impossible to read 90 bloody pages of it and what it makes even worse is that 8 line sentences aren't uncommon...

For interested Dutch people (though I doubt there will be any :P) here is one sentence:

Someone save me :P

No, I wouldn't recommend it :P

lol I had to read a book that was ridiculously long and written in some classicy old style of the english language for my architecture unit last year.

Incredibly, I solely read reviews and peoples judgements on the book on amazon and wikipedia (lol!) and had to make a descriptive comparision with phrases from the book and its meaning with my own work relative to the site of our design project (a bit weird).

We also had to portray scenes in graphical form and compare them exactly to a film called 'London' (an arty film based around the Clerkenwell Tales or something). I watched about 3 mintues of it halfway through the vhs video.

I scored top of my class lmao! Didn't read the book, nor watch the video. Blag of the year.

Goes to show really, some things really are just a load of old bollox!

Reading could be 2 things, i.e what are you reading at university, where "reading" means "studying". The second is your conventional meaning. Currently, I'm reading BSc Software Engineering at Nottingham Trent University (basically programming that pays more ;)) and I believe I'm currently reading The Narrows by Michael Connolly. I do like my detective thrillers. ;-)

Everyone knows that million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10; indeed, it's a common requirement in fairy tales. If the human didn't have to overcome huge odds, what would be the point? Terry Pratchett - The Science Of Discworld

L. Paul Bremer III - My Year In Iraq

A great book by the US Ambassador to Iraq, showing the struggle to get Iraq working. A fine compliment to the book I just finished, Bob Woodward's State Of Denial

Bill Bryson - Adventures Of The Thunderbolt Boy

A great autobiography by a great writer.

More stuff on its way from amazon :D

Currently, Louis Theroux - The Call of the Weird

Very readable, I like his self depreciating, honest writing style - and the fact he's maybe a little naive, which is refreshing for a journalist!

Must confess I've slowed on the reading front of late, last thing I read fully was Noam Chomsky's Failed States - enough to put anyone off reading for a while!

I really enjoy them. He picks topics which people have very definate preconceived ideas about, and his interviews are great because they really disrm the intervieweee, not because he asks the questions they don't want to answer, but just because of his style.

In the book I'm reading he re-visits the people he interviewed for a BBC series he filmed (Weird Weekends) - a prostitute, a self help guru, a male pornstar, UFO weirdo, the lot. He somehow manages to get into these industries really well, and actually uncovers things which can change your perception of these people.

He's very readable, very funny but very perceptive too. Much prefer his writing to his father's.

I'm reading Also Sprach Zarathustra.

The next ones will be Menschliches, Allzumenschliches, Jenseits von Gut und Böse and 1984, not necessarily in this order.

A very good read if your an argumentative bugger like me :)

The Book of General Ignorance is a comprehensive and humiliating catalogue of all the misconceptions, mistakes and misunderstandings in 'common knowledge', which will make you wonder why anyone ever bothers to go to school. If you still think that Henry VIII had six wives, that the earth has only one moon, and that Mount Everest is the world's tallest mountain, then you need this book. Urgently.
