Im looking to get a laptop and i sort of understand how graphic cards/chips work in laptops but just want some clarification.

ATI Radeon Xpress 200m IGP w/ 128mb Dynamically Allocated Ram...

does this mean that the graphics will take 128mb from the RAM installed on the computer?
So if it was 512MB of ram, that it will only really have 384mb that can be used?
Also if it is 128mb dynamically allocated does that mean i can vary the amount it uses up to 128mb? For example could i set it at 64mb? Or can i even set it over 128mb?

I think (Gav will probably correct me ;)) you're right in the sense that the video RAM used will be taken from the system RAM. So if you had 512 Mb system RAM and set the BIOS to use 128 Mb of video RAM, you'd end up with 384 Mb for Windows to play with.

Absolutely correct. It can mean that the card has 128mb dedicated to it (not from system RAM), and then adds more from the system as it's needed (ATi use Hyper Memory for this, nV TurboCache).

The BIOS may allow you to lock down what gets taken, but most won't give you any control at all.

Nope, i have the same problem (well, i am quite satisfied with the settings so far), i have 512mb Ram, and the video leeches 92 Mb (very strange, why not 64 or 128 but 92 ;))

But most games run quite good on it, and windows runs quite nice on 420mb.

Nope, xp ;)

And that's not that strange, as i also managed to make windows xp running on a p3 with 256mb ram.

XP will run on a Pentium 2 450 MHz with 128 Mb RAM. I know, because I've seen it run (quite well too actually back in the day).

Celeron 300A (running as a P2 450MHz*) was actually the very first PC I saw XP on. It was mine. Can't be certain on the RAM, but I've almost convinced myself it was 384MB.

Ah, those were the days.

* the Celeron 300A officially stands as the best chip I've ever had. A cheap 300MHz CPU that, by changing the FSB in the BIOS from 66MHz, to the other setting available of 100MHz, even with the cheapest of motherboards guaranteed you'd be running the fastest CPU Intel offered at the time. That rocked so, so much.

You've not lived till you've installed Windows 2000 on a 386 :P
