Some fun facts about worlds biggest cruise liner

Posted by villej

As Clarkson said in one of his books:

"777's are rubbish, and while I recognise that the four-engined Airbuses are astonishing, they're still buses, and where's the glamour in that?"

Just to prove that the 747 will always pwn Airbus's ;)

About a month ago Oasis of the seas, the new worlds biggest cruise ship was delivered from same shipyard in Turku to it's buyer, RCL. It is about one third bigger than The Freedom of the seas.

-The ship can take 6296 passengers, and 2165 crew members.
-It has 2706 Cabins, of which 1956 are with balcony.
-525 000 m2 of steel plate has been used, and it has 2500 km of welded seam.
-It has over 16 000 fire sprinklers and over 100 000 electric sockets.
-630 000 litres of paint has been consumed.
-There is 24 elevators for persons, and over 150 000 m2 of air conditioned area inside the ship, and over 12 000 living plants.
-There are 8000m2 of windows.
-There are 5300km of electric cableson the ship.
-The combined cylinder capacity of the six main engines is 8096 litres, and have overall power of 97020 kw
-The building of the ship took 8000 man-years.
-4 100 000 litres of water is cleaned during one day

The first trouble the ship faced was to get it out of the Baltic Sea, as its draught was too big to use the passage that was specifically created for big ships, and the ship was higher than the Great Belt bridge, which was the alternative route. It just managed to go under the bridge, as it has a system that lowers its exhaust pipes, thus making it a little, but enough, lower.

I was not really able to find pictures that would really show how big the ship is, but when looking at the pictures bear in mind, that even each of the lifeboats seat 370 people, so they are not small either!

The start of this video also gives some idea about the size: http://www.cruisecritic.com/articles.cfm?ID=1051

Yes, the 747 really is a beautiful piece of engineering, even today.

747 is a masterpeice, with huge improvments on the engine front over the years it remains (imo) the best thing in the air atm. I guess just because its new, but the A380 is terribly unreliable. Alot of the problems are kept from the public (for obvious reasons!). Though like I said I guess these are teething problems due it to being new and very early in an aircrafts life cycle.

As for cruises, never really seen the appeal to go on one. They do look amazing things, citys on water!

It's home port is Ft. Laudrdale in Florida, apparently one of the most economically shattered states in the USA!

Although it holds "only" 2550 passengers and 900 crew (compared to the Oasis which carries 6296 and 2165 crew), I recently travelled on the giant MSC Musica. It was still really, really huge.

This M/S Amorella is a big ship too(About 1/3 shorter than that MSC Musica in length, if measured by gross tonnage it's half the size), it has cabins for 2000 persons, but look how small it is compared to the Oasis of the Seas. It's just mindblowing.

Holy crap, these ships are pretty awe-inspiring. The sheer scale of structures like this is mindblowing. Brilliant thread.
I've thought about going for a cruise on one of these ships for ages, just to check them out. Reading this has re-fired my interest!

LOL. I can imagine some sort of road sign, like the black ones for lorries we get in the UK.

"Atlantic (avoiding low bridge)"

"Warning: Denmark has a height capacity of x metres"

This is the nearest boat service to me:

The Woolwich Ferry - linking the North Circular to the South Circular at the East End of London.

saw a documentry about the building of that boat, it was amazing to see it being constructed, and seeing it at the planning and design stage.

It was staggering:-o

Out of interest, how long does it actually take to build one? The operation is so large-scale and complex it must take ages.

Huge boats scare me. I was lucky enough to get to see a Aircraft Carrier (Nimitz Class supercarrier - IE THE THING IS FARKING HUGE) and actually go around a WWII battleship onboard. Those things are simply absurd. And they don't have near the vertical presence that modern cruise liners have. It's just so amazing how large boats can be. When your standing quite a distance away from one of those things and it is practically all you can see, well, you know it's huge.

(atleast that's what the ladies tell me) ;)

Huge airplanes aren't nearly as intimidating. Then again, I hate boats. I'm always afraid they'll sink. Would be my luck.

The Flanker is gone. :(
