The Royal Caribbeans Freedom of the seas, that has just a month ago been delivered from Aker Finnyards Shipyard in Finland to it's orderer, is at the moment the biggest cruise liner in the world, and will likely hold it's "title" until the first ship of Genesis class that is going to be built on same shipyard for same operator will be delivered in 2009.

Here's some fun facts about the ship:

-The ships 12 cylinder Wärtsilä motors cylinders diameter is almost half a metre and the diameter of the turbochargers is one metre.
-The area covered by the decs is 16,5 hectares
-There are 5800m3 of windows
-There are 3500km of electric cables and 160km of pipes on the ship
-The combined cylinder capacity of the six main engines is 6940 litres
-420000 litres of paint were used while painting the ship
-The building of the ship took 4000 man-years.
-2 000 000 litres of water is cleaned during one day
-1 800 000 litres of drinking water is made during one day
-Swimming pools have 530 000 litres of water

Putting Freedom in Perspective
• At 160,000 GRT, Freedom of the Seas weighs more than 80,000 cars or 32,000 adult elephants.
• Standing upright on its bow, Freedom of the Seas would trump New York’s famed Chrysler building (1,046 feet) and Paris’ Eiffel Tower (986 feet).
• Boasting a width of 185 feet, Freedom of the Seas is actually wider than the White House is long (168 feet).
• When measured from the waterline to the top of the funnel, Freedom of the Seas towers 208 feet tall, which is approximately the same height as two of the Statue of Liberty, placed head to toe.
• Freedom of the Seas has enough staterooms to host all, and we mean all, NFL, MLB and NBA players and coaches in one single sailing.
• The Arcadia Theatre seats 1,292 guests, approximately the same amount of passengers housed on three 747 airplanes.
• Although the ShipShape Fitness Center only has one regulation size boxing ring, it is large enough to fit 62 of them.
• The Royal Promenade stretches longer than a football field, running 368 feet down the center of the ship.

That is... quite large.

How the hell do you go about designing something such as this... seriously... think about how much painstaking time goes into it :\
If you put 32,000 adult elephants on board would that push the thing beyond the bouyancy threshold? Noah only managed to get two of the things on his liner.

it's very big but also very ugly, like a big floating block of flats

Yeah, that is "quite" big. I'm very intrested at this "boat" at engineering wise, it's just so huge. The Genesis class will be 20 metres or more longer, and also wider, it will have gross tonnage of over 220000. :| For comparison, Freedom of the seas has 158000. The Genesis class will be quite the biggest possible ship that can be built, at least in baltic sea. Any bigger one won't be able to pass Denmark, because the bridges are too low.

While I don't think it's that beatiful, won't say that it's ugly either. Though older ships look better than newer ones I think. My all time fawourite looking ship, and also engineering wise it's one of my favourites, as it has quite unusual motors( it has 2 JET engines, and alongside 3 diesel engines), is GTS Finnjet. It has been the fastest passenger ferry in the world since it was made in 70's, and it was also biggest for few years.

I think that one is even uglier than Freedom of the seas.

Well, I just do happen to like plain and simple lines. :) But the Freedom of the Seas isn't ugly by any means I think.

I love huge structures like that but I'm also terrified of them. Being in the water with that thing approaching me would just scare me absolutely stupid.

It's a marvel of engineering, quite similar to this:

big things like that scare the crap out of me, too. They're cool, but secretly scary.

but don't you actually want to do that, being the @#$%& freak you are? :P
That top picture gives a poor perspective unfortunately, this ship is absolutely huge and I can't find a pic of it online that does it justice. :(
