Former world rally champion Richard Burns has passed away Friday evening after battling cancer for the last couple of years.

Burns was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the end of the 2003 WRC season. Since then and despite several medical operations, the 34-year old did not fully recuperate from the decease.

Richard Burns was born January 17th, 1971. He drove for successful world rally teams like Mitsubishi Ralliart, Prodrive Subaru and Peugeot Sport. It was with the Subaru World Rally Team though that he won the drivers

i have just learned of his passing. Absolutley terrible. a gutting day for Rallying.

He was my favourite driver. he was so fast, yet so smooth n rarely ever made a mistake. Its not fair is it he was so young.

its been a terrible year for the WRC

I never knew the extent of his illness, at one point I thought he might be coming back to rallying so it's a big shock to me.

a very sad day for motorsport, to lose a talented driver and a great man.

RIP Richard. He was never my favourite driver but it's always sad to lose someone you've watched drive in your lifetime and especially at this age. :(

Someone I always respected, as a man and a driver. As with many others I thought he was past the worst of his illness, obviously not.

A sad day for rallying and motorsport in general.
