Both valid points, but sadly I am a relative n00b when it comes to GP4 modding. I've taught myself how to build and paint a car, how to edit performances and default race lengths, and how to create my own cars.wad. That's the stuff I've needed.

However, beyond that I've not had much success. I couldn't figure out CSM even WITH the help of the manual, because I'm too used to doing everything manually, and I am also unable to change race length for installed tracks. :) Formula 400 effectively runs from GPxPatch and manually uploaded files in the cars.wad.

I think the series is damn good considering these limitations, but I'd love to be able to mod more freely. Right now, however, I'm in the midst of preparing a curriculum plan for my new class in September, and spare time is somewhat limited.

I could help you with those files Toby, it's not so difficult and time consuming.

Thanks, I may well get in touch before the start of the season.

By the way, I *think* we might be full now... If everyone who has expressed interest signs up, then there will be 22 teams. I may want to sign up 24 though, because there always seems to be one manager who goes AWOL each season, and it'd be good to have someone who could step in on a race-by-race basis every time that happens.

Of course, it would be even better to have a field full of managers who submit all set-up sheets 100% of the time, but hey. :) You never know, my latest group of rookies might all be exceptional.

Toby, where can i find the SMD-01 template?

Cheers

EDIT: I think we should use a F400 logo, loosely based on the official F1 logo. The logo can be placed on the rearwing endplates, at the top of the engine cover and beneath at the top of the front nose.

So we can use the top of the rearwing for the team names instead of the name of this serie. Cars will look a lot better with this idea.

Your thoughts about it Toby?

In response to Turbo Lover:
You can get the SMD-01 template from me, or of course from MDBsnake. If I haven't already e-mailed it to you, please ask me for it! I've lost track of who I've sent it to!

And I'm perfectly happy with having the series name on the rear wing and the team name on the sidepods, thanks.

EDIT: Although a F400 logo could replace the small 'F400' at the tip if the nosecone.

In response to retop:
(See PM) I can paint the cars, no worries. You'll just need to draw roughly what you want.

I really want to try and learn how to paint my own car, but I just need help. I tried looking at vicente's guide, but it's confusing. I downloaded the SMD-01 template, I just need detailed step by step help with painting the livery.

Toby, i have decided to not take part in your F400 championship, because for me personally the restrictions of making your own car livery is too much.

That takes for me mostly of the fun away, i'm sorry.

My sincere apologies, good luck with the championship.

Cheers

A great shame, I was pleased about the prospect of our first Dutch manager. :(

Designing the car livery is an incredibly small part of what is a multi-faceted and very involving game. It occupies 2 weeks in a 6-month season. So if you feel that painting the car was going to be the most fun part, I think you have probably misunderstood the nature of the game and it is therefore a good decision not to take part.

Thanks for letting me know, anyhow. Luckily I over-subscribed just in case somebody dropped out, so we're still full. :)

What you say about painting the car is right, don't get me wrong, i love to be a team manager, cos you have 'total control' over your own team and that's why it's a shame that you can't have the same control over the car's livery. I don't wanna be rude, but i think that's ridiculous.

So for me it doesn't feel that i'm an owner of a team.

I'm struggling a little to understand, in that case... how you design the colour scheme and paint the team name or logo on the car is entirely up to you.

The only bits which I add are the car numbers, driver names, and 'Formula 400' across the back wing. The rest is your design.

Of course you don't have 'total control' over the car livery, because they are all from the same series and must all have a mark identifying them in that series, but that is the same pretty much wherever you take part. There are no sponsors in the game so there are no sponsor logos - but that doesn't interfere at all with the livery design.

From what I understand, the root cause of your complaint is that you were asked to create a team logo on the sidepods instead of the rear wing, where you wanted it. Is this the sole reason that you feel it is 'ridiculous', or have I missed something?

In the rules it was also stated that the name of the team would be painted by you. The name of series as a name on the car is for me personally too much, a couple of F400 logo's is so much better. It's the one carshape that defines the serie, not the 'same' liveries. The carnumbers on a white square background looks not so professional, especially with cars that are not white. Because there are no sponsors allowed it's logical to have enough possibilities to have your teamname written on the car, the space at the top of rearwing is a perfect place for it, as at the sidepods.

The F400 serie will benefit when cars look like the real deal also without sponsoring.

Ah, the instructions should not have said the team name can only be painted by me. I copied + pasted the instructions from a pro forma I wrote last year, and that line should have been erased. My bad. :) It has now been updated for future e-mails.

Whilst I respect your comments as a car painter and acknowledge that they are perfectly valid, I still maintain that the car livery is a rather trivial part of the process. I shan't change it because the vast majority of the current managers aren't too fussed about their car's appearance, since they recognise what a small role it plays in the overall game.

After all, it's a management game, not a painting competition. Those who have signed up have done so because they want to manage a team. What the car looks like is immaterial to them. As I've said already, if people regard the car livery as an important part of the game then they have misunderstood its nature.

However, if you are still interested in lending a hand in some of the aesthetic aspects of the game, and helping me to identify potential for improvement in future seasons, I would be very glad to listen to your experience and suggestions.

I completely agree with you Toby, but i'm a person with an eye for detail. The basic setup of the serie is very good, i really like the way how the performances are generated. But it takes the overall quality of this serie to a higher level if people have enough freedom to design their own livery.

So my suggestions regarding the cars livery are:

- Teamname at the sidepods and at the top of the rearwing
- Carnumbers in the same style as the livery
- The name of the series at the back of the rearwing
- F400 logo at the frontnose, top of the engine cover and at the rearwing endplates
- 2001 high res tyres and rims
- Arai 2005 helmet shape

BTW, i'm not a carpainter at all, but i have experience with the W300 serie for GP4 at this forum.

Due to one manager's withdrawal, there is now one place available which needs to be filled before the season starts.

Please get in touch if you are interested. It's being plugged elsewhere also, but keeping it in the gpgames family would be cool. :)
