@ Mini Maestro - I really like your new sig! It shows up an embarassing defiency of us British! We are crap at learning foreign languages and sadly from this September on, students will not be required to take any foreign languages for GCSE!
Personally I like speaking French and German. I have a GCSE in French and one in German. I also did A level German.
Once I went on holiday to France and when we got to our hotel there was a Dutch man on his own who was glad to see us because my Mum spoke quite good French. He could speak English very well and told us he loved it because he felt that it was comparatively easy to learn English as opposed to French. Needless to say he didn't speak much French and watching him and the hotel owner trying to communicate was quite a laugh.
I think one thing that goes against Britons is that we are isolated from mainland Europe and therefore isolated from languages foreign to our ears whereas mainland Europeans live close to other countries and other languages. Imagine living in the south of France near Spain and Italy or maybe in the East of France near Germany, Belgium and Switzerland. How many languages are these people closer to than Britons are to just French?
