Ok, so here's your starter for 10.............!

What is the common consensus on using 2048 x 2048 tga's rather than 1024s?
However, instead of just one tga in 2048 x 2048 combining all 3 tgas, I'm
planning on using 3 tgas at 2048 x 2048 - SUPER DETAIL!

Am planning on including 512 and 1024 versions, but also a super hi-res!

Will GP4 be able to support it? Will your pc's ?

Have started so will give it a go - just wondered what the opinion was.

Steve.

Ps. most of reshaping done on Malaysian FW27, have updated the graphics and just redoing them in 2048, will then most likely release it.

I still think 3 1024x1024 tex´s gives the best result and the Po hit isnt that big
In the other side just 1 2048x2048 tex "weights" much more than 3 1024x1024 tex,and I think the result its not really as good as 3 1024x1024 texs.
3 2048x2048 texs...I think thats crazy ;)
But its just my opinion :)

I liked your car Steve, thats why I want to help you make it even better.

I am a Williams fan and spend 99% of my time playing the Williams car in GP4 so I like it just right.

As for the tex files, I say go with your idea of 3 2048 x 2048 tga's. My comp is good enough to handle it and I prefer extra detail to speed.

I say go for it and let the community decide whether it is the way forward or not. I can't believe people are saying no without actually seeing the end result.

tbh i dont think u need to see the end result to know tat 3 texs that big are crazy....because they are.(IMO)

but hey if he wants he can but if u do do it u will be aiming the car a a smaller majority of people i reckon.

Not true...
I already tried 3 2048x2048 texs with some cars that I have made and the final result ingame isnt that much better than the currently used 3 or 4 1024x1024 texs.
Also the PO hit was quite big,but maybe that happens because of my Pc specs aint that good enough to handle them :(
But as I said before this is just my opinion if Intweb wants to do it,go for it :)

Hey Intweb !
Great car, doesn´t matter if some parts aren´t 100% correct.
I really like it.
If you want to make a Bahrain Version of your car, I´ve found this pic and just want to show it to you !!!
Ok two things:

The exhaust of the engine are new.
and the second one is this hole at the end of the engine cover !
Thats all
Keep your great work up !
bye
Kev

all the 79 cars are made with 3 (or more :o) 2048x2048. my pc cant handle it - i use 256x256 :( - but it doesnt hurt, and i'm sure some pcs can handle atleast one car with 3 2048s.
maybe another option is to map more imaginatively - ie make the nose (as seen from tcam) higher res than other parts etc.

its looking pretty good so far steve :)

i agree with tony only certain parts need to be high res really, and although these bigger texs might mean bettere detail will it really be that noticable

@Button14
I think its for the little wing over the rearlight,so it´s for more grip I think ! :-)

dan last time i heard those textures where 1024 x 1024 thats not super high res thats high res...

@Intweb : 3 x [2048 x 2048] :o are you joking that would kill my pc :P i think if you do it that high you are aiming as already said to a smaller base of people because not many of us can run that size of texture without a reasonable PO hit.
maybe 2 x [2048 x 2048] and whats stopping 1 x [2048 x 2048] and 1 x [1024 x 1024] :P

I think 3 2048s for one team is a bit mad, to be honest... since it equates to a whopping 12 1024 textures

Cool, thanks for the feedback and lack of arguements!!!

I just tried mapping some at 2048 today and the results were incredible, but I don't want to cut anyone out, I've added lo-res textures on the FW27 that weren't on the FW26B & C simply as I had received a lot of e.mails from people asking for them, I don't want to limit the appeal of this car and would always include 512 & 1024 textures.

Maybe I'll just pop the Malaysian one out at 1024 and look at 2048's as the season progresses.

What are the benefits of running one Tex per car (as in placing all 3 x 1024s in one 2048)? Other than being able to make them slightly bigger?

Anyways, I'm virtually done on the Malaysian car, will get it out asap and then start merging the parts into the Launch and Melbourne cars to bring them up to the latest level, then I'll look at the Bahrain car next week!

Thanks again.

Steve.

Just to note Intweb, make sure the gurney flap on the rear wing is white along with the wing element itself.

In pre season testing it was blue but from Melbourne onwards the team blended it in and made it white. In your Melbourne version it was still blue.

The gurney flap being that little lip at the top of the rear wing element that runs from one side of the endplate to the other.

:-)

why not try mapping a car with just a single 2048x2048 texture? youd still get the great detail as a 1024, but with a 2048 you could potentially map a car in a similar way to f1challenge - the entire side of the car length and top part all aligned. i believe the new minardi was done this way and it looks fantastic.

also, whats to stop having a second smaller 256x256 carbon/brake tga to accompany it if it doenst fit to the main one?

- benefits, higher detail than 1024
- just ONE 2048 texture
- mapping could fit more into an easier set of space
