tis, you should go ahead with those brake discs. I don't care much for 3d spokes, you can easily simulate it with alpha's and it saves us a lot of polys.
About those polygons. Don't be afraid about the polycount, the performance of GP4 will not be harmed much by it. 5000 polys is a medium figure. My F2003-GA has about 10000 but GP4 is still running smooth. It depends on the resolution of your textures.
