lost, found and now a bit vague (with mapping)

I'm using sim's tutorial and it makes it easier, but.

Now click on any of the selected faces, and the shape(s) of these faces wil appear in the UV Viewer, as shown below...
...Now, obvioulsy you will want to move this shape onto the texture and position it...
...Once you have done this, and are happy with the result, switch back to faces mode and continue.

i'm having trouble with the continue bit.

i select all the faces i want mapped to 'A' (for example), then do all the steps, until 'A' is shown in the UV viewer.
then i desect all and start with 'B'.
i want 'A' and 'B' on the same tga/tex file, but when i go to put 'B' on the UV viewer, 'A' either disappears, or is linked to 'B' and won't move independantly.

i think i could mange with a few dozen tgas, but I could use some help.

cheers.

i think thats the way things are, each time you make a new mapping object it is the only one available to edit. ie cant have more than 1 object in the uv mapper, so if you get what appears to be two different shapes in the uv mapper they are still treayed as 1 object

you have to do each mapping object separately, you can have as many mapping objects as you like per tex file but only 1 at a time.

any chance of an advanced tutorial?
i'd like key shortcuts. my brain leask away with all the clicking :(

how can i turn on all the previously mapped griddy triangly things in the uv mapper view.
i think i'm getting too pedantic. my tex_1 has about 60 different areas mapped!

i think next time i'll do a rough texture first. and map to it.
i started blank this time and take endless scrren grabs and lining them and the tga up in ps.
and my tga is 2048x2048 now so its not the fastest.

and and how do i do a poly count?

is there a way to stretch the mapped area?
if i select the top half of a cylinder and map that to a rectangle on the tga, then the edges are distorted stretched.

new problem:

in the pic below the uv mapper view shows the red squiggle, as does the side view (at top), but the 3d view doesnt. and in game it doesnt.
whats the problem? has it been mapped elsewhere? different object?

ps, thanks andrew, i'll contact you if i need to.
is there a url for the last 'argument on the best way to do mapping '

a couple of things may be wrong there:

you forgot to assign the poly's in question to the texture
you may have selected a poly on the other side of the car
there may be polys over polys there

my guess is the top one, as i do that a lot :$

i think that was the winner.
i selected those that didnt show, and deleted them.
now its ok.
is there a co-ord box when you're scaling and moving the selections on to the tga?
i just drag them, but there must be an easier way.
the mp4-18 has been mapped amazingly- everythings symetric and stuff.

AFAIK Z-modeler is all dragging it, it gets very annoying and i find it difficult to do,

i think Bojan gets it symetrical by selecting the same area on both sides of the car, and then scaling them. then he just selects one side at a time to position them on teh TGA, i may be wrong tho :)
