I am giving up on GP4

I can't figure out why GP4 will no longer run properly in my updated rig. It should really rock, but 21 -25 fps with this equipment is a joke. I got 39fps on full settings before the upgrade. I have done everything I can think of and tried out all the advice I got from all of you great people. GP4 should not be incompatible with this equipment, but there it is. This is just depressing and I have to leave it. I will follow the forum in eternal hope, but I can't play this game anymore. :(
Thanks for all your help

what about a boot manager and a little win98se-partition, just for gp4 ?

greetings, jp

Hi Korny,
I'm still here. After weeping my eyes out, I decided to copy and paste all of the 2003 tracks, circuits files, the 2003 cars.wad etc that I had kept in store after clean installing. I can race around A1 at 34FPS (drops to 32 once). The funny thing is, that even increasing the graphics load makes little difference. In a race I have 20-22 fps. I can even increase the resolution- this has even on occasions given me a few MORE fps. :-o

****, this is a weird game. I love it and I hate Crammond :-( for not redesigning the game from scratch. GP2 was a great game in it's day, but you cannot just go on builing on top of the old game.

Somewhere in this game is a (probably small) tweak or whatever that will remove this problem of mine. Somebody tell me where it is. My PC rocks with everything else...it must rock with GP4 ...right?

whats it like playing at 20fps?
i manage with less than that, and after the start things are fine.

notes.
mirrors off once dropped my Po drom ~120 down to ~20.
try without the GPxPatch timings (tv style 'B' and '9';) - these can boost my Po by 60 odd too.

It's not fine tuning - look at my equipment. It's a big blockbuster bug.
Driving at 20 is a pain and controls are unpredictable. You see I am used to driving at 35 fps dropping to 29 fps at race starts, everything maxed with my more modest gef3ti200.

BTW: I hope the administrators don't get pissed off with me, I have another thread on this and have replied to other related threads. I am not a spammer... just very very sad. :(

i run an amd xp 2400, 1024 mb ddr 266 , geforce 4 ti4200 on windows xp.
i get 30 fps and am happy with that,i've heard of problems with ati's for all sorts of game..try the 3duru.com forums for more help..plus if you have a bigger cars.wad (mine is now 77.9MB) all the new and bigger cars will be a hit on your system.
go to service icon in your control panel and turn of unneccessary services

hope some of that helps you in any way

I'd go for a Win98 se install just for games (multiboot)
WinXp sucks for games imho...
And turn off 'heat haze' in gp4, it uses lots of PO and adds nothing, besides a twirling effect on the track or something like that.
Your system is more than ok, and it should run awsome, so there must be something wrong.

Don't give up...

WinXp sucks for games imho...

WinXP is great for games if you ask me. SBK 2001 never worked OK on win98, but it works fine on XP. For GP4 you just turn that sound option down and it works great!

If you want to play games that are 5 or more years old you must have win98, but for all new games XP is very good.

To jp2:
what about a boot manager and a little win98se-partition, just for gp4 ?
If you want to do that you must format the disk, and that is not a good solution for only one game.

Hi LarryM,

Did you completely disable Anti-Aliasing or did you set it to Application Preference or something else?

As far as I can see, GP4 and Anti-Aliasing don't get along. There is a massive performance hit even at 2X.

I have a similar spec machine to yours but I still have a GeForce3 and I'm getting 35-40 fps.

Keep at it.

You have probably tried this, but try turning your hardware acceleration on your sound card off. My system is P4 1.5GHz 512mb ram 133mhz GForce 4ti4600 XP Home edition. Before i turned the sound card acceleration off the game was almost unplayable po of over 200 with everything on low or medium settings.
I turned it off and now po never goes above 120 average is about 90. Everything maxed out except Pit Crew and heat haze. FPS set at 36. The game still sounds great too! :)

Turning off sound accel gives me a couple of FPS. no more. Heat haze? I love it, I have been running heat haze all along. That is not the problem.

The problem is the following mathematical anomaly:
Gef3 ti200 + win 98 + 512 333mhz ddr = 39 fps
Radeon 9700 pro + Win xp+ 1024 333mhz ddr = 22-23 fps

I have also been reading some threads on sound cards. Maybe this SB 512 pci is the root of the problem.

Anti-aliasing? That's interesting EJ-14. With my ATI controller thingy, I get to choose between x2 and x8 (I think) - or game preference. The minimum is not "off" but "x2"

Windows 98 - XP could be the problem?

Turning off sound accel gives me a couple of FPS. no more. Heat haze? I love it, I have been running heat haze all along. That is not the problem.

But does it make any difference to your frame rate if heat haze is off?

The problem is the following mathematical anomaly:
Gef3 ti200 + win 98 + 512 333mhz ddr = 39 fps
Radeon 9700 pro + Win xp+ 1024 333mhz ddr = 22-23 fps

hmm for me it is:
GF3 + win XP + 1024 PC-1066 = 46fps (recommended by GP4) . But I run at 30-35fps.

I have also been reading some threads on sound cards. Maybe this SB 512 pci is the root of the problem.

Turning off sound accel should negate this problem. Unless your sound and graphics cards are sharing the same IRQ. :-o

Anti-aliasing? That's interesting EJ-14. With my ATI controller thingy, I get to choose between x2 and x8 (I think) - or game preference. The minimum is not "off" but "x2"

I would go with game preference here. I think there is a setting in the f1graphics.cfg for turning on Anti-Aliasing but by default, and in most tweaked config files, it is set to off. For GP4 i run my GeForce3 at Application/Game Preference for Anti-Aliasing and off for Anisotropic Filtering. Aniso is also configurable in f1graphics.cfg but again is usually set to off.

Narrowing it down slowly :)

unistall the game and remove it from the registry.

Intsall the latest drivers but not the lasest 4in1 drivers.

install gp4 but do not run it when installed.
install the patch

now run the game but do not let it configure the graphics, do that part yourself.

This sorted out my problem when i upgraded and only got 21 fps, done the above and got 45.

Also check you CPU speed as they default setting is 100 but your CPU might be if u have an AMD 133 FSB.
