Hmm yeah.... but that was never truly as good as it was with the abbey kink as aposed to the chicane.

On first impressions, I'd rather they kept the old layout, but its hard to say without seeing the new one in action.

It should be good for track spectators as well, which is a big plus.

Yeah, in theory... you'll be able to see a bit more of the action from further away.

You can see a higher resolution image of the plan here

The new pitlane between Club and Abbey is going to be a very long one based on the location of the pit entry & exit on that image!

It also seems quite high speed, so stops might be short afterall.

will be interesting to see what happens in regard to the infield spectating, bridge corner used to be a good place to see the cars close up as they blast under the bridge, that will now go.

As far as i can remember there is no general spectating on the infield section, only grandstands, with the exeption of the pit exit enclosure.

I like it. The new corners don't seem to add anything, but then they haven't taken much away from the old layout so it's not great loss. I always thought that Club/Vale/Abbey was horribly dull after the 1994 changes anyhow.

That may change. As this new "arena" is supposed to be all about the viewing experience.

That's a good hi-res image, I'm not sure if it's of an official source, but the new turn 1, assuming that the new pits & paddock is intended for F1, looks faster than any other diagram I had seen to date. Probably flat out.

It's a shame though that they just had to dick about with Club. But I supose that with a slower exit they're trying to make it easier to follow the car in front out of it.

Awesome news :D gets rid of the final mickey mouse section, adds some more straights and has actually added some near-flat corners (something that would make Tilke shudder, I'm sure). Also a nice bonus with me and the girlfriend getting some granstand seats at Becketts :)

Yeah you should be able to see the new arena from the becketts grandstands. I'm thinking the armcoe might get in the way from the general spectator banks though.

For me, the only winners in this are the trackside spectators and we get a decent looking first corner.

They've ripped apart Club, which made for some cracking battles into what normally wouldn't be an overtaking spot (Abbey).
They've taken away one of the better chicanes still left (why do they only ever remove the good chicanes on F1 tracks?)
We don't get any new overtaking points - anyone who's watched racing into Brooklands will know it's a difficult overtaking spot even in lower formula.
We've got a sea of run off tarmac all along the new section.
Bridge, no matter how easy it is in the dry now, is still a big-balls corner in every condition other than perfect... and this is England!

The new part just looks like it could be on any new track on the calender. It's completely generic.

Silverstone needed to change, but the bits which required that change weren't on the track!

Probably just me but I loved abbey chicane for some reason, really dissapointed now thats gone. I'm also worried that the general admissioon tickets wont be worth it anymore, because theres no way they will let the general admission people on the inside of the old track to get to the new section :(.

Also, Copse has always provided pretty exciting starts as a first corner. The new T1 looks fairly single file.

I don't see why the Abbey start should be any more single file at the start than Cospe. It seems as wide as Cospe if not wider.

Cospe would still be the better bet for overtaking in general though because it has a longer flat out zone on the approach.

Damon Hill's now saying that a lack of funding prevented them from designing a better layout...

EDIT: btw, not sure if others noticed this yet, but it looks like they are modifying Chapel as well...

I think I can see what you mean... not sure the reasoning behind that... hope it's only for the bikes.

The highest speed on the circuit is set just before braking for Stowe.
And Chapel's modification will definitely decrease that top speed.
Applies to both cars and motos, but probably was implemented with the motos is mind.
