Lewis Hamilton on 2007: "I blew Alonso away"

Lewis Hamilton has added to the pre-season drama in a year that his rivalry with former team-mate Fernando Alonso looks likely to be renewed.

"I definitely didn't blame myself for the year that I missed out," Hamilton said in an interview with McLaren team sponsor Johnnie Walker. "My first season in Formula 1, alongside a World Champion - a double World Champion - and I blew him away. I beat him.

"No-one's ever come in their first year and been at the front, let alone beat a World Champion, beat the mentality and the strength that he would have and his experience in Formula 1 already up to that point."

Anyone else sensing that Lewis is feeling a bit intimidated by Fernando's return to a top team? Whatever the underlying reasons, his comments here are hilarious IMO.

I read that the other day and thought what a bellend. There is schummi arrogance, and there is that.

The difference with Alonso is that he kept his mouth shut in that dog of a Renault, and still pulled off some discretely solid performances. Lewis has been silver lined, excuse the pun, from the onset. Put him in a below par car and let's see him talk.

I am on team 'Nando, purely because there is actual evidence to support him. Lewis hasn't had a below par car yet.

He blew him away? Statistically, they were even. And if he hadn't screwed up twice, then yes, he'd have beaten him. But he did screw up, so it's definitely him to blame. Yuk, the arrogance. I now see what you Brits have to put up with every time Hamilton makes it into some tabloid.

Yeah read that a couple of days ago too. I was starting to gain a bit of respect for him after a bit of a tough season - but then he has come out with that.... As mentioned, I think he is feeling a bit intimidated of the thought of Nando beating him!

2013 - Nando must come through..

Christ I'm sick of people who say that. I guess you weren't watching through-out 2009 and seeing Lewis (and Heikki) struggle with the god awful mp4-24? Lewis snatched 3rd in Melbourne in a car that looked awful to drive and was slow to boot. I think he put in a heroic effort last year but you haters just blindly ignore it. He made Kovalainen look decidedly average. Fact is he matched Alonso in his debut year in 2007 and ended up beating him on a count back. Again. He beat a double world champion in his rookie year. Yeah, ok he didn't 'blow him away' but given that most people expected Alonso to walk all over him, he certainly blew away any preconcieved expectations we all had. You might argue that Alonso never received the support he needed from McLaren well that's rubbish. He's not a small boy who needs to be cuddled. You can be sure his engineers did everything possible for him. They wouldn't have been doing their jobs if they didn't.

Sure, Lewis isn't perfect. He makes mistakes, but then so does everyone else. He can be a bit arrogant outside of the car and his father often comes across as being a bit of a jerk too, I'm not denying that. But behind the wheel, I'd say he's the best in F1 currently.

First half of the year I felt Heikki was at least on par with Lewis. The 2nd half obviously Lewis was better than a Heikki who was very, very disappointing - he's better than that.

As for 2007, Alonso struggled in a team which from the half-way point wanted him to lose. I think it's of massive credit to him that he was able to stay in the championship battle to be honest. If Hamilton can't see what the rest of us could, then he's either totally deluded or had had a few too many.

He had a stunning debut season, but in a team which backed him and did little for his teammate other than give him a car.

In the 2 years since, frankly, I think Alonso has been in a different league of performance to Hamilton, or anyone else for that matter. His consistency on the pace trying 110% everything single corner has been a joy to watch. It'll be interesting to see how quickly he manages to get up to that level in a Ferrari which looks to have been difficult to drive for several years now.

I too thought he did a bit of "growing up" after Melbourne. That comment if true definitely spoils it a bit. He definitely rattled Alonso's cage, but Alonso still took it to the wire, and statistically wise they ended the season really quite even.

Edit: I'd also still without hesitation rate Alonso as the best driver in F1 (even above Schumacher for obvious reasons). In some ways he reminds me of Jacques Villeneuve. Now don't scoff... after Villeneuve's championship year he was still visibly the most "on it" driver for years the absolute effort and soul he put into his driving was beyond comparison. And Alonso is similar, only that he is likely to return to winning ways.

It'sa travesty that the Alondo/Hamilton partnership didn't last a few more seasons and on better terms, because they are without a doubt in my mind the two best F1 drivers on the grid at the moment. McLaren would have dominated all and sundry in '07 and '08. I don't care to comment on which is the 'best', because I don't think there's an answer. Both drivers are awesome and I'm relishing seeing them fight out the Championship next year.

Did anyone read that Ron Dennis interview recently where he described his relationship with Hamilton as "masculine love"? What a tool :p

hey i tell you something first of all ham is an complete @#$%& and he should take his ball and go home (its a phrase from the rock). 2nd JV did the same thing in 1996/97 and he is one of the all time greats and i am very sure if he will drive this year he will kick some ass. Another fact is that McLaren screwed nando and what they are cooking this year smells like 100% Grade-A, money back guarantee, one big bucket of Canadian moose PISS. So i think Fernando goes on to become F1 World Champion, so F1, and the entire F1 family, will never, EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER be the same again.

I think Hamilton's getting his arse burnt on where doesn't need to be burnt. He frankly knows that he was given the way forward in that team right from Day 1. I was surprised at how Fernando was able to still stay in the title hunt after the Ferrari Scandal and then the bitter feud going on inside the team between him and Ron Dennis.

Now it just seems that Ron's departed from the team and Hamilton's feeling low since Whitmarsh has brought in Button. Fair enough he won't be up to Hamilton's mark during some of the season he's now feeling restless to whether he is going to get his way inside the team or not and just needs to vent his frustration someplace else.

Bottom line is; He didn't blow Fernando away, infact it was Hamilton that got blown over.

he is already being a knob and we are not at the first race yet! someone really needs to stick their front left down his inside rear in bahrain (hopefully kobayashi) and roll him, so he can sit there all exposed with his arse in the air - although i hope sutil doesn't take full advantage of this. we didn't have a roll last year so we have to make up for it this year.

Lewis should shut up his mouth, his talking like he is the reigning world champion and like he has won 8 WDC... he cant say "i beat a 2-time world champion in my first season"... 1st, he had same amount of victories in 2007 that FA (4), same points (109), and remember that McLaren was supporting a lot more Lewis that Alonso (at least from Hungary)... and LH dont say nothing about that... Im not a fan of Alonso but he did more to win that championship than Lewis... and finally Kimi won ;) (but he is a deserved championship, without the best car he had 6 wins). 2008 was different, LH had the best car with Ferrari and Alonso was inside a wheeled-potato called R28... and FA made it won... 2009 is useless to explain, is too fresh... and now with Alonso in a Ferrari that is being worked in since mid 2009 and with one of the strongest drivers line up (with Felipe) LH for sure is trying to start a psychological war against FA

if that's the case then he is fighting no one.. i mean more than half the grid rates Alonso higher than him
mentally Alonso is more confident than he is at the moment.. Lewis had a car that could've won the last 4 races but he didn't... i think he just encouraging himself, the problem is that a lot of people saw different.

not only he didn't beat Alonso, but he learnt a lot from him, and as already mentioned the team supported him more. bragging about that is stupid

tbh im happy to see him speaking what he thinks rather than some pr-bullshit he was forced to say.

this is just mindgames for Alonso and Button I suspect.

However I very think the words have been taken out of context, he probably meant he just really shocked Alonso and well the rest of the world. Its amazing to think that for much of the season he was leading the WDC!

I do think he should watch his words or how he says things, but I od think they have been taken out of context.
