Good news.

Great work from Fry and Brawn to coup this.

The story of Button to Mclaren is a strange. Im not quite sure if I like the idea or not yet.

But when you dont know it often means you dont like it...Anyway...

*Unsuprised glazed look on face*

We shall see if that really is true (as much as i trust the Guardian) but it wouldnt suprise me if it is. All England at McLaren, possibly all German at Mercedes.... The ultimate grudge fight =]

Jenson would be a fool to leave the team he's been at home at for this long. I cant and wont believe it's over a few mill here and there. Of course the press will say so but I just cant see it. Afterall this £6mill Mclaren deal is less than waht he apparently would have got at Brawn!

I think Goddard is the one trying to play it hard here and pulling the strings. Which is why I said I cant and wont believe Jenson would leave the team over it. Surley he's got more sense than that and would settle for the deal Ross plants on the table, Goddard should realize that too. This deal should have been done long ago.

edit - [www.independent.co.uk]

Hard to believe its been 2 weeks since Abu Dhabi!! Seemed like longer with all the going on's!

This is Jenson we're talking about. Remember the Williams/BAR mess? "Oh I want to drive for Williams, but these mean people won't let me". "Oh wait, I like BAR now! I wana stay!!!"

Just read a site suggesting Vettel is a keen target for Mercedes in 2012. Imagine that, Nico and Vettel! Cor!

Jenson drives it like he owns it; Lewis drives it like he stole it

firstly, great work by Ross and his other business partners, something like this was surely their main objective when they took over (keeping the team going, securing the workers' jobs). they wouldn't have been able to match their early '09 form in '10 as they probably won't have a double-diffuser type of thing up their sleeve. winning both championships was just the icing on the cake, a very nice by-product of the takeover.

as for Jenson, Merc obviously don't rate him very highly and he doesn't figure in their long-term plans, so fair play to them for not giving in to his salary demands. they see beyond the hype and see him as the mediocre driver he really is, who got extremely lucky in the best car by a massive margin in the first part of the season, who then spectacularly fell off the ball once he didn't have that massive car advantage.

he should take the McLaren money and go there, even though i believe he will be soundly beaten by Lewis.

and Eddie Jordan is talking crap in the media today, saying McLaren are the best team to handle 2 strong drivers. see 2007 for evidence to the contrary.

mind you, without Ron Dennis' influence it might be more fair now than it was then.

RIP Jules, never to be forgotten. #KeepFightingMichael

Autosport and Turun Sanomat are reporting also about Button to McLaren deal coming closer.Turun Sanomat writes that Kimi Räikkönen will retire if Button will go to McLaren as rumoured, Mercedes drivers will be Rosberg and Heidfeld.

I kind of like their idea. And now my poor connection reveals same pic was posted also earlier.. ;)

Kimi, so, Massa Fernando Sebastian is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood that message?

Not looking good for Kimi then, and I can't see him returning after a sabbatical tbh...

Hopefully he takes a last minute pay cut and signs with McLaren, but it is becoming more and more unlikely unfortunately :(

A nice concept, but remember that Brawn had already signed a title sponsor, so the livery will be largely based on their colours probably.

Unless that sponsor was, in a roundabout kinda way, Mercedes. ;-)

Well, it could be ;)

It would be a very well-kept secret if it was, because most F1 journalists seemed convinced it was a corporate sponsor, linking companies such as Orange to the team.

Hehe, Orange would be brilliant. You'd have one silver car with orange wings and sidepods, and another with red winds and sidepods.

Silver and red would be the new white in F1.

The sponsor was the Abu Dhabi company wasnt it?

Muks - its more cat and mouse between the two. If Merc dont rate him Kimi or Nick or Glock would have been already signed. The fact that this is going on is evidence enough that Brawn/Merc whatever want Button.

Both parties, Brawn and Button want the deal to happen it seems. If not then the Mclaren deal would have happened before.

The fact that Mclaren and Brawn are holding out for the decision says alot more. Both it seem would want Button rather than the alternatives out there. If Mclaren did want Kimi then again they would have signed him, but they can a driver as good if not better for a much lower cost.

Dave - funny article but authoritative sources? lol. Its hardly a saga, both teams want his services, thats the shocker. difference between last time is he signed with another team then tried to get out of it. He is negotiating with two teams here Dave, no saga. The fact its been made a bigger deal is because theres nothing better to talk about now the racing has stopped.

edit - when was the last time several drives were not confirmed more than 2 weeks after the season start? Not just that but two top seats are available

On the prospect of Button to Mclaren, my prediction.

Qualifying Lewis 18-0 Button

Races Lewis 9-9 Button :p

Somehow Button vs Hamilton is just less mouth watering than Kimi vs Hamilton. I don't think Button will stand much of a chance against Lewis - he'll pinch a result here and there, but it'll be more like 13-5 in Lewis's favour in my view.

Kimi on the other hand wouldn't be all that bothered (relatively) about results. So long he can keep the motivation he had from Hungary onwards, then he'd just jump in the car, drive it as fast as he can make it go and worry about Hamilton later, and I think it would be fascinating to see that one.

Button vs Hamilton would be a non-starter for me. Button's a very good driver, but Hamilton possesses some of the most natural talent of his generation - the potential to be another F1 great in years to come. It would be like Barrichello or Massa vs Schumacher - on a good day they would have the beating of Schumacher on genuine pace, but those days would be spread quite far apart.

Still, it's commendable that Button is contemplating this and not shying away. He clearly wants to pit himself directly against one of the fastest guys in the sport and feels he can do something. I wish more drivers carried that view.
