Bridgestone and Firestone are two parts of the same company, if I recall correctly, Bridgestone owns Firestone.

Yes (and Covfan was joking). The Firestone/Bridgestone link is the only reason Bridgestone are the only tyre manufacturer not to have issues at Indy. Goodyear and Michelin had no previous experience with the surface, Firestone/Bridgestone did.

Autosport says Bridgestone will stay in GP2, GP2 Asia and MotoGP, for now at least.

Maybe, but with at least three new teams next year, it is a big increase in costs for little more publicity.

The official reason supplied by Michelin was that the were in F1 for competition. With a single tyre supplier, there wouldn't be any competition and therefore no reason for them to stay.

Good point. I think though whoever comes in (if its not Michelin) will struggle to be at the same level Bridgestone were. I think we will have a year or two or shoddy tyres, or at least not upto the same level as Bridgestone. Maybe good for us, bad for the teams :p.

Nick - wasnt that the reason they left MotoGP too?

If that's the case, then I doubt they'll be back this time, will be interesting to see who eventually does pick this up in 2011.

Japanese involvement in F1 is really going down the pan, isn't it?

Super Aguri dissolved, Honda gone, Toyota gone, Williams abandoning Toyota power, Nakajima dropped, now Bridgestone pulling out...

...That's not to mention Kawasaki pulling out of MotoGP and Subaru leaving the WRC.

The only good to come from all of this is that Mount Fuji has cancelled its F1 contract so Suzuka is set to stay permanently!

Nah, the tyres Bridgestone manufactered this season where worse then the tyres they manufactered in say 2005 - 2006, so if Michelin came in and use the tyres of that season they would be better then Bridgestone is doing now ;-) Thats the reason FIA wanted 1 tyre supplier, so they could ask for worse tyres to bring down the speed.

Well worse, they are slicks so better then grooved tyres, but not as much as they could be ;)
