90 degrees circuits

Hey guys.
I was just watching the Abu Dhabi race, and I was thinking: Damn! Formula 1 is all about 90 degrees curves or bends, at least the new circuits. What's up with that? Does it really helps to improve the show? Spa has long bends and they are awesome, as well as Silverstone, and we have great shows there.

I'm not against 90 degrees bends, In a circuit, there should be one of them for overtaking, I guess, but not a circuit with 3 or 4 90 degrees bends in a row.

What do you think of that?

I think you should be forced to watch the Phoenix races on loop for a week. ;)

Interesting that everyone seems to be reacting to seeing a Grand Prix at Yas Marina by suggesting ways the circuits/racing/sport in general can be improved. :P

Thing is, 90 degrees curves (so all Tilke´s circuits except Istambul) are boooooooooooooooooooooring... the circuits need fast curves... like in Suzuka, Spa, Monza, Interlagos, Silverstone in some stages... The best races in this year were in the classic circuits (ok, this year in Silverstone wasn´t a incredible race)... F1 needs fast circuits like Zandvoort, Estoril, Magny-Cours...

You take that back. F1 does not need Magny Cours.

Sepang is not all 90 degrees. It has plenty of long turns, even a couple of double apex corners.

F1 needs Paul Ricard IMO, not twisty Magny Cours.

And Estoril is not at all a fast track. Especially after the old fast Turn 1 was ruined by a very slow 2nd gear corner.

Yas Marina is not that bad for a Tilke's circuit, but I would like to see other tracks done by other designers. It just seems that Tilke is the only track designer in the world.

Cheers

Come on Frantic. You're a fan of the old club. You should know fine well Magny-Cours was awful. Estoril I never liked and Zandvoort has completely changed from the track it was (which would be lethal and rubbish at the same time in modern F1).

Ok, Magny Cours wasnt the best, but it was fast, 75 % of the lap with full thoortle I think. My dream is a French GP in the old Clermont-Ferrand but its impossible... The thing is, the last 3 circuits made by Tilke are street circuits. We only need 1 Monaco, not 4. Semipermanent tracks are the solution for me.

@ gav: You´re right, the safety is very important, the show has to come back, but without deaths... I said that circuits because they were the first that came to my head... another fast circuit was Kyalami, or the 70s Buenos Aires layout... but the BA circuit is destroyed. The gobernment said that they could eventually repair it for an Argentinean GP in 2011 but here we cant take as true the poltical´s words... Anyway the best track in the world is still the Nordschleife :)

The 1991 season was the start of the real slippery slope circuit-wise. Magny-Cours and Barcelona both being introduced.

Wonder what sort of lap times a modern F1 car would clock around the old Kyalami circuit. 1.02.366 in 1985...

It would be lovely to see some technical justification for these anti-90 campaigns.

If all you have is long, sweeping corners, cars cannot get close enough in the acceleration zone to attempt on overtaking move due to the heightened effect of turbulence during high-speed cornering. Short, tight corners are therefore needed to facilitate overtaking.

There, I've given you a fact to work from. :) Now, why would you get rid of these overtaking-makers?

Thats why I said, Its good to have some other challenges on a circuit than 3 or 4 90 degrees bends. I agree with you Locke Cole. So, we can say Tilke doesnt know how to make circuits. Technically speaking, you should have a long straight, followed by a long curve and then a hairpin or something like that.

This is the first part of Shanghai, made by Tilke. ;)

Apart from that, I don't either like 90deg corners and stop-go tracks full of chicanes that Tilke usually designs.

Portugal's new circuit in the Algarve would be interesting with all of its elevation changes.

Unfortunately, the best thing that Algarve track has are the elevation chages, but, apart from the the front straight, the track doesn't have many long straights, so overtaking wouldn't be a thing that we would see much. Nevertheless, it's a great track, and I think that we'll see good racing next year for the WTCC Portuguese round. The Superbikes also provides good racing there. But regarding F1 I have some doubts.

Cheers

If you want overtaking you need good circuits (like Spa), get rid of the double-diffusers (otherwise, its proved that double diffusers make the car that is running behind them to lose stability),lees downforce to hace less aerodyinamic grip big rear wheels to have more mechanical grip AND fast corners.
