Its upto the FIA now.

FOTA are meant to be meeting with them before Monaco, but this is good, it will be push Max and Bernie hard about the cap and two tier system. Max knows though he says he wont miss Ferrari. Bernies pocket will ;-)! And alot of us will. The cap will be increased, but most importantly the FIA need to make it mandatory so that every team has to follow it.

Toyota have only threatend so far. Ferrari is the first who have actually decided not to. Even though I wouldn't be surprised if I see their name on the 2010 entry list around December.

If they would actually do it, I think some more teams may follow.

Toyota are meaningless. They were always going to leave soon, now they just have a good excuse.

But why do they want to spend more money? Patrick says an moveable rear wing can gain about 2s and no matter what their budget they cannot improve that much. just stick to a budget cap (mandatory) and we will see very interesting designs if the regs are relaxed.

only downside is loads of staff will be sacked in all teams.

Exactly my main concern! However there are some work arounds... with so many limitations the staff won't have to work 20hrs a day so many days a week (especially during race weekends). Reduce the workload, reduce overtime pay and perhaps if that isn't enough then offer a 10% salary reduction but with bonus benefits (the salary bit of course only if senior managemente takes a salary reduction as well)!

How is "reducing workloads" meant to prevent staff cuts? ;)

I'll be sad to see Toyota go, but I'll be one of the few ones. Nobody'd really miss 'em. Red Bull have made noises too. They'd obviously be a bigger loss, particularly if they and Vettel win the championship. Ferrari on the other hand...you'd have to say F1'd really miss them. But, the teams have made all these noises before and nothing happened, it'll be all sorted out in the end, I'd bet.

Glad that they've issued this threat - maybe the FIA will start to listen. How can they be so stupid as not to spot the most blindingly obvious problems of an optional budget cap?

A work week in the US has 40 hours, over that it's overtime. In Europe it's from 30-35. The F1 teams have their workers go on very long work hours, that is very well known. Instead of having a guy work 70 hours in a week, have two work 35. Everyone is more relaxed, functional and more efficient.

Oh right, are F1 staff subject to those laws?

No. Just no. Basic understanding of salary pay is missing from your post.

Oh, and I don't know any full time staff in the UK who work under 39 hours.

You work in a school. Ironicly, the place where the least amount of work is done by adults, and where the holidays are awesome. You have an even bigger advantage since you can't bitch and cry like the teachers. "Oh I've got my marking! I've got marking to do!". I'm sure marking takes up those 10 weeks of holidays or whatever the hell they are on now. :p You have it extremely lucky :p (edit: providing the school stays open that is, I haven't kept tabs on that situation)

i work in a school also in IT. I had those same thoughts but I have changed my mind. Teachers work bloody hard and very often take work home with them. Yes there are some crap and bone idle teachers but in my my experience they do a very hard job and fully justify the holidays. Imagine coming inot work day after day having to constantly repeat the same things, disciplene the kids, etc. Yes they knew what they were getting intot but it doesnt make it any less hard.

By the way I work 37 hours per week and earn £23000 per year.

Ferrari seems quite serious now

regardless of whether you are a fan of Ferrari or not, i think most would agree that losing Ferrari would be damaging the sport worldwide.

Why? Same as Lotus, right?

No team is bigger than the sport. Let them have there hissy fit. They'll come back after they realise they can't run off and build an Indy Car like last time.

It is simply dispicable and simply amateurish for the FIA to be dictating these rules without consulting the teams! This should not be a public arguement but should all be part of negotiations made behind closed doors to ensure next year in F1 we introduce further cost cutting measures whilst still maintaining the current Constructors.

Ferrari are right to use this threat, I may not be an F1 fan but am only too aware that F1 CANNOT survive in its current form as the world's leading motorsport without major contructors.
