If memory serves, the same reservations were made about the races in Long Beach and Detroit in the US, and they were far more popular than protesters were trying to make out. The race in Adelaide was a boon for the city as it was about the only thing to liven the place up all year. They don't call it the City of Churches for no reason ya know.
Melbourne has a place on the F1 calendar for the foreseeable future, but I can see Australia losing it if a) it can't be held later in the day (and on a better circuit, I vote Phillip Island) for European viewers, and b) Bernie stops approving more races in countries closer to or in Europe!
