Lol Wurz got a podium in his third race, but you are right, it was at Silverstone. Technically he's had two podiums but like Verstappen has only stood up there once.

slightly different, but was it Brazil '03 that someone should have been on the podium but wasn't because he was taken to the medical centre because of a crash? was it Alonso?

and in a race in the 80's, was there a podium with just the winning driver as the 2nd and 3rd placed drivers went home or something, leaving the winner on his own?

Yeah it was Alondo who 'finished' 3rd but was taken away to the medical centre after his accident. Probably the worst podium ever with the eventual winner on the 2nd step and no 3rd placed driver!

Yeah Alonso came 3rd in Brazil despite crashing and bringing out the red flag. Was it his first? IIRC Ron Dennis wasnt very happy as Alonso had lost Raikkonen the race and still got points

I think it was his 2nd podium, finished 3rd in Malaysia the race before I believe. And I don't think Ron Dennis was too upset at that point because Raikkonen was declared the winner at that point, it was only a week or so later that they declared Fisichella the winner after an investigation into what actually happened. The man I remember being very unhappy was Coulthard, who a few laps before the red flag had pitted from the lead for his last stop and rejoined in 4th, before the remaining lead drivers pitted the red flag was thrown and Coulthard was classified 4th.

I seem to remember that Gilles Villeneuve was involved in that one....

Imola 1982, Pironi disobeyed team orders and overtook Villeneuve on the last lap, cracking race but the repercussions were to result in tragedy.

No, both Didier and Gilles were there - the pictures show a very stroppy looking Gilles looking as if he wanted to kill Didier

I was thinking Mark Blundell but i think he managed 3rd place twice.

Well done for answering my original qestions...it takes a lot to catch you guys out!

Also, what about Stefano Modena? How many times did he make it to the podium? I remember him qualifying on the front row in Monaco in 1991...but i think it was actually the race after that in Canada that he gained 3rd place after Mansell's last lap mishap.

Forgot about Roberto Moreno, robably the happiest 2nd place i've ever seen...Aguri Suzuki's 3rd place was in the same race.

Wat about the drivers who took a long time to get their first podium? Marti Brundle took 8 years to get his first official podium...or one that wasn't taken away from him anyhow! David Coultard didn't take long but i remember him losing out a couple of times...last lap in Monza 1994.

And what about those 2nd and 3rd places gained through brilliant driving? Where the drive to the podium place was just as good or better than a win? Hakkinen in Suzuka 1995 was an excellent drive if i remember correctly. Damon Hill holding his nerve when he was inexperienced in tricky conditions at Intelagos 1993...only beaten by Senna and made a better job of the conditions than his team mate, Prost.

And as a last one, those drivers who ave visited the podium a lot at the peak of their career, but had been there once or twice in their early career with lesser teams...a young Barrichello in Aida 1994, Frentzen in Monza 1995.

Hopefully lots more fuel for discussion there!

"No, both Didier and Gilles were there - the pictures show a very stroppy looking Gilles looking as if he wanted to kill Didier"

He was there briefly and then left the podium furious whilst Didier sprayed the champagne.

Modena made it to the podium as early as Monaco 1989, in the Brabham. Brundle in the other Brabham probably would have taken 3rd were it not for the need to change the battery, forcing him to hop out of the car during the pitstop.

Here's an interesting one - how many drivers can you name who have been on the podium at their first Grand Prix? There have been at least 8!
