The German Grand Prix appears to have been granted a stay of execution following crisis talks in Stuttgart on Friday.

Race organisers met with regional government officials, banks and Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug in an attempt to salvage the event, which has been in jeopardy because the debt-stricken Hockenheim circuit is near bankruptcy.

Gunther Oettinger, minister president of Baden-Wurttemberg, told German media that there was

The new circuit rocks. It lacks the uniqueness of the previous version, but you think recent races have been dull!? Watching cars at full throttle in a straight line for 60% of the lap, THAT's dull.

Actually the old Hockenheim used to be one of the best places for passing, since it was so wide and had long straights and there have been plenty of exciting races there, whereas I don't recall a single race on the new Hockenheim they just kinda disappear from memory because they were so bland.

From memory it wasn't really all that wide?

In fact, it wasn't so wide! and it wasn't so easy to pass..
With this track, every race wasn't bad, I even remember particular episodes, the best one the fight Raikkonen-Montoya in 2002 when the Colombian overtook the Finn after a 5-6 corner battle side by side-anyone remembers?

Yes, but one overtake-manouvre can't make a whole race good.

yeah i remember that, (i think) Kimi finally overtook JPM into the right hander into the stadium section, when JPM went off the track (or was it the other way round?).

EDIT: wrong way round, JPM overtook Kimi, thanks Kimiraik.

a good race was 2000, but that was made artificially good because of the half wet and half dry track, and with a fast car starting at the back (Rubens), and MS was out of the race at the 1st corner, so who knows if he might have won it if he hadn't crashed out with Fisi. it would probably have been less exciting then though.

Yeah, I know, but that is just the best episode, but there were others, and if you remember well, the races there with the new track have never been boring- many overtakings, more than average at least!
With this I don't mean I prefer this track for sure; I was really sad when I found out the 'true' Hockenheim would be destroyed :(

Yeah the overtake happened at that corner but it was JPM to overtake Kimi ;)

yeah the fight between Alonso and Button in '04 was good, it went on for a few laps, and Button even had helmet trouble.

I couldn't disagree more. When there ever wasa a "dull" circuit it was the old Hockenheim, especiallly with these chicanes they added in between. I have seen countless boring races there from the 70s on. The new one might not have the legendary status, but every legend has to start somewhere and even the most traditional track was a novelty at one point in history.

I seem to recall a little overtaking of Schuey by one Mika Hakinnen with, I think it was, a Minardi as filling in the sandwich. Would that happen of the current track? Not a hope. It was wide enough for three cars so how wide should a track be?

I just heard Eddie Jordan has claimed that MS and Ross Brawn might be thinking about entering a team in 2007. Renault could be up for sale but the favoured deal would involve VW under their Audi name. Isn't Audi the successor of Auto Union? That would be an interesting blast from the past. They could even claim a longer history than Ferrari.

I'm sure this is just off-season chat but if there is anything to it, its a fascinating proposition.
