Renault F1 chairman Flavio Briatore has tipped Giancarlo Fisichella for success in 2006 at the launch of the team's R26 challenger in Monaco.

The Italian reckons that Fisichella has never been in a better position to challenge for a world championship than this year, particularly in the wake of Fernando Alonso's announcement that he will switch to McLaren at the end of 2006.

"Knowing that Fernando is leaving will put him [Fisichella] in top psychological condition," Briatore was quoted in Gazzetta dello Sport.

"If he could just develop a bit more nastiness he would certainly be able to challenge for the world championship."

As well as suggesting that Fisi needs a tougher shell, Flav also hinted that the R26 may suit the Roman better than its predecessor did.

"He has all the cards he needs and on top of that, a car which was not built

No question as to which Renault driver will be getting the better equipment this year....

I think they will have a similar equipment but this time the car fits better to Fisi's drivingstyle unlike last year.

lol yup.
Looks like Alonso wont be winning no title this year as long as Fisichella is in a position to win it as well.
Bitter ending to the Alonso-Briatore/Renault-alonso relationship

Totally agree......, they canĀ“t just dissmiss alonso for theyr ego, they have to swallow that., but like minimaestro says, if fisi is in the same position..., alonso will have bad luck!

Typical Renault intrateam politics. Well ole Flavio had to do something to save face, after his golden boy ditched the old man for Mclaren. And I'm sure the folks at Mclaren are smiling away at this.

Rofl!
If Giancarlo is successful this year then there would need to be some explaining from Renault about his 2005 form compared to the 2006.

I was hoping this would happen - I've always been a Fisichella fan and wanted to see how he'd perform in a top team. Last year he let me down big-time, and not simply because renault *may* have favoured Alonso. So now that Renault are putting their weight behind him, I'm keen to see whether he really is a top-line driver as I have believed, or just a sack of unfulfilled potential.

It's not unlikely that McLaren will have #1 and #2 on their cars in 2007.

I agree TripleM, i like Fisi and think he can be as fast as Alonso but his race pace is not as consistent, he still tends to tail off towards the end of a gp whereas Kimi, Schumi and Fernando are fast all the time.

i reckon the cars are exactly the same (2005 and 2006) but cos Alonso is leaving, they are gonna support Fisi more, and so need an excuse for why he will win, and why Alonso won't, hence "this years car suits Fisi more than Alonso, like the 2005 car suited Alonso more than Fisi" (when really they just supported Alonso more).

lol this is hilarious. Flav is classic

i reckon mclaren could easily have 1 and 2 next year, if they keep Kimi that is. if they keep montoya they will have 3 and 4 or 5 and 6

Maybe so but Alonso's driving style is so strange compared to everyone else so I believe that this year it will suit better for Fisi's driving style unlike last year.

Well there is an element of a car being suiting one driver more than the other in a team. Schumi likes to have his cars with a "pointy" front end so he can have an aggressive turn in but a loose back end which would be corrected by great feel and reflexes. Others prefer a more balanced chassis which is why Herbert and Berger hated the Bennetons that were designed for Schumi when they drove them.
