I'm not the best person to ask, but if I were to guess it would be that Team Editor actually patches GP4.exe directly with the data in the PF before you run the game, whereas GPxSet patches the memory with the PF after GP4.exe is loaded. In other words I don't think GPxSet actually writes the PF data to GP4.exe, whereas Team Editor, I think, does. You can see this if you run GP4.exe dirby Noog - Grand Prix 4
Desc 53 - The power factor (CC cars only) Go back out on to the circuit and watch the CC cars. How is the top speed of the better CC cars relative to yours? If it's too high, or low, it's time to get to grips with desc53. I tend to adjust each skill level, ie ace, pro etc at the same time, ie descs 53,55,57,59 & 61, but there's no good reason I can think of for doing thiby Noog - Grand Prix 4
Well, following a bit of sleep I checked again and I DID save part 3, at least an early version of it. But I saved it in a weird place which is why I got confused. Apologies to my cat, especially; although the bandages do make him look kind of heroic so it's not all bad. OK, let's get focussed. We are about to enter the Zone of Hard Toil. But speaking of cats, you've probably heby Noog - Grand Prix 4
OK guys. I'm conscious that I'm clogging up this thread a bit and I don't want the fantastic info everyone has posted earlier to get lost so I'm going to make two longish posts in succession which will attempt to finally answer mralpha's original question and conclude my tutorial for now. Maybe my contributions might form the basis of an introductory how to guide in aby Noog - Grand Prix 4
Before I post the next installment, let me address landex's observations. Yes, some mods do use one PF for all races. There's nothing wrong with that, but I would argue it misses out on a level of potential subtlety. As for giving a team the same failure probability in all races, yes a single PF will do that, but I actually do that anyway in my multiple PFs. The reason is that whby Noog - Grand Prix 4
Praise indeed. Thanks. But guess what. I just closed the next installment I've been working on for several hours without saving. Yep. Seriously. I covered MDs and some other useful bits and pieces before answering your question and then I got distracted by the other thread and closed the editor without thinking when it got in the way. Time for bed methinks. Good job I don't haby Noog - Grand Prix 4
@ Isaint - T'was exactly in me thoughts me dear... @ mralpha - I agree about Team Editor. Reluctantly, I abandoned it too, for the same reasons. So you're an old fart too then? @ TGF1Driver2 - If you've a few Gigs spare for a partition you wouldn't need a new box. Better still, how about sticking an SSD in there? I've no axe to grind but... Since you're nowhere near my timezone I'm going to assume you want me to go on OK? Part 2: Understanding Performance Files Open up GPxPatch, click on the GPxSet tab and make sure that the 'Player car performance team dependent' option is set to 'Old behavior'. There's a reason for this but we don't need to cover it here. Now, in your GP4/gpxpdata fby Noog - Grand Prix 4
Dare I do another Linux ad? No, don't. It gets old and makes everyone think you're a boring old fart... But I am So don't mention it then... But surely TGF1Driver2 would like to know that my Linux box has never ever crashed mid-race? No. He wouldn't. Be quiet. But, but. Ah, OK.....by Noog - Grand Prix 4
mralpha - What you want to do is more than possible. In fact, I guarantee I can help you do what you want to do. As for your knowledge, I'll share what I know with you and together we'll leave a guide that others can use, OK? The problem with GP4, I found, was that I didn't know where to start initially. Thanks René. That's the first time I've come across your issue tracker. Looks like there is plenty of interesting info in there. I'll be reading that through later. Good to hear you think it might be possible to pursue this. I find it fascinating that I tend to drive differently when I control the car of drivers with particular personalities. I realize it's all in my head bby Noog - Grand Prix 4
Is it possible to assign an individual aggression/personality rating to individual CC drivers? In real-world F1 racing (all racing really), some drivers develop a reputation for consistency. They might not be the fastest or bravest driver on the circuit but they can usually relied upon to bring the car home (and as a result of their invariably gentler treatment of their cars), they tend to haby Noog - Grand Prix 4
My workaround is probably all that can be done then I guess. Thanks again and keep up the great work: GPxPatch especially is fundamental to the longevity of this game IMHO.by Noog - Grand Prix 4
Heuristics checking. Double-edged sword. It might suck but Norton AV would be much less effective without it. Hate to sound smug but Linux users don't have to concern themselves with such things. A quick virus check once in a blue moon and it's good to go. I've found two viruses in over ten years of Linux use (both Windows specific).by Noog - Grand Prix 4
Got it. Thanks very much. Might I ask another question please? I'm sure if it's on-topic or not, but it might be... I'm currently refining a set of substantial revisions to PRBlanco's Performance Calculator spreadsheet which cover the F1 years from 1978-1991. Each uses real-world GP results to generate unique and highly accurate perf. files for each race in each season bby Noog - Grand Prix 4

Something else just came back to me. Not sure it'll help but it's interesting and it might help someone else. About 3yrs ago when I first started messing with GP4 I used to use Loki's Lo2k theme to get a nice rev counter and display the PO figure but I discovered over time that it would freak out once in a while and start showing weird readings (like -198497387438 etc), which alby Noog - Grand Prix 4
This era in F1 was just great and you're doing a super job of recreating it. Thank you for all the hard work.by Noog - Grand Prix 4
Always amazed at the quality of some of the mods, like this one. Thanks to everyone helping to keep this game moving forward like it does.by Noog - Grand Prix 4
Yes please, but I'd prefer a how-to video to study and work along with. I find GP4Builder quite confusing and I don't think I'd get it in one go.by Noog - Grand Prix 4
That will be why then. Interesting. It's true that my machine is a better spec than yours: i5 2500, 8gb, 1gb Nvidia (720GTX I think). However, prior to getting hold of that I was using a faulty Dell T7400 with an E4350, 16gb, then 8gb, then 4gb and finally 2gb (can you spot the fault!) with the same GFX card once the OE 512mb Nvidia card burnt out. With that POS, I mean PC, the gamby Noog - Grand Prix 4
When you say 'native' TomMK, do you mean running GP4.EXE (via WINE) without GPxPatch - or are you comparing it to Windows? I think you mean the former, so you might want to check that you have "All" selected in the Compatibility field under the GPxPatch tab. It makes sure 'all' your CPU cores are available to the game & I recall having to do this at one point.by Noog - Grand Prix 4
The improvements work well and are much appreciated. Thanks for doing so much to keep this game alive.by Noog - Grand Prix 4
Have been running GP4 on 64-bit (and 32-bit) PCLinuxOS under WINE (on a seven year old PC) for a while; full GFX, loads of mods etc. It's perfect, with plenty of CPU cycles to spare for compressing audio, downloading or playing mp3s etc. Just make sure to have MSVCRT.DLL, MFC42.DLL and binkw32.dll available (I put them in the game folder). I think GPxPatch needs them. I also put dby Noog - Grand Prix 4
