Help - First person shoot-em-ups!

Hi,
Can anyone give me some advice on a decent first person shoot-em-up.

Since battlefield2 I haven't used any and would like to know which is the best (preferably contempory)
game out there.

I would like a game that has online capability, but can be played fully offline.

Any pointers greatfully received.

its OK, but whats so great about it? I understand the first one, but second one is same old same old just less surprising.

Call of Duty 4. Half Life 2. (Ep1/Ep2), Portal, Team Fortress 2.

And why COD4 is so much better than COD5? I have played COD4 on pc and also tried COD5 demo on xbox360 and both were really great.

Im asking because Im interested to buy 1 (ot both) of those games when beeing able to find those for cheaper price.

COD5 is poor. The setting is overdone, and the variations in the levels is awful. 1 wooden village after another. The only way to understand where you are going is the radar, which is a mess of over photoshopped icons which mean nothing upon a glance. When you get onto game play, the AI is awful, and refuses to advance (thus making it even harder to advance), and the entire game is made up of quick time events. Press F to do this. Press F to do that. Can't I just press F to complete the game? Even stuff you aren't doing are quick time events. The scripted falling tower, and man getting shot on the ledge of the first level. Of course the weapons are just as terrible. Most of the guns couldn't hit a barn - from the inside.

Overall COD5 is exactly what COD1 and COD3 were, and exactly what I expected from Treyarch. Not too bad, but no better than average. But don't worry, for COD6 (or COD5 as it will be named because of the odd naming they are going to give the series) Infinity Ward is back and we all know it'll be back to top notch stuff.

I heard it was just going to be called Modern Warfare 2?

EDIT: A check on Amazon says it will be called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

And that the RRP is £5 more than any other game! Not that its much more, but I think thats disgusting by Activision to ignore the general £39.99 price tag on every new 360 game.
