rFactor/GTR skinning - what do you use....

Hi guys,

I've been skinning cars for GTR2 and rFactor for quite a while, but am now getting increasingly annoyed with the program I am using. I use Gimp 2.0 as it was described to be very good, similar to paintshop oh and FREE. I've found however, that when using it to skin cars for rFactor I get this very irritating glassy/chrome/shiny finish all over the car that I just don't want, and can't get rid of. I've found very few answers to questions I've asked about this in other forums, be it no one knows or are just reluctant to help :( So I'm thinking it might be time to go spend some money on a program that might be a little more commonly used, so if i get stuck i don't hit a brick wall and hopefully easier to find answers.

So........

I was wondering if anyone here also skins cars for rFactor, and if so what do you use? Paint shop pro, photoshop, Gimp... anything else.

What benefits does your program have and how easy is it to use????

Thanks :)

I know absolutely nothing about rfactor skinning...
but I came across this yesterday. Alpha channels......

For photoshop this vid, but the concept should be the same?

thanks for the link, I've seen that already and unfortunately it's very complicated when trying to do the same things in the video for photoshop as it is in the gimp program I use.....

Show as a screenshot of what you mean. (Oh and use GIMP 2.6, it´s much better).

GIMP should show you an alpha channel, all you have to do is find it then change it. i dont know how rfactor skins work but in gp4 the lighter the alpha channel the lighter the reflection.

Problem solved!!!!

Before and after shots.

I've just messed around with lots of different things in the alpha chanels.
Basically I created a new one in a new window and altered the Opacity. Then I made my skin how i wanted it to look then merged the layers, copied the whole lot pasted it on top of my new alpha chanel and bobs your mother's brother!

Neil you're quite right it's exactly the same, the lighter the alpha chanel the lighter the reflection.
