Locke Cole pretty much nailed 2 right there with Chrono Trigger and FM. Anyway, my list:
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is out of this world... I was so involved by the story and it was my 1st game with a real story (I was almost 14 when I got it). But the Zelda series is usually superb, so you can fit Twilight Princess in there too and probably Wind Waker (I am farther with Twilight, hehe).
Football Manager (Championship Manager 3 until CM 01/02, then FM for me). Super addictive, mostly very well made and it's about footy, the greatest passion in the history of the universe (they play it in Andromeda galaxy).
Chrono Trigger: once again, dead-on regarding engaging story, characters... just SO good. It's a shame the Chrono Trigger 3d project had to be shut down, I want that with proper graphics and sound. That game is a beauty.
Shadow of the Colossus: don't rent it, buy it. It is a short game, can be finished in 12 hours if you choose to do some exploring, but it is something it can't be explained. It's like art but in game form. Incredibly touching, very few characters (the hero, his trusty horse, the dead girl, and the colossii) in a vast world, and a storyline that will really get some knots in your throat. The soundtrack is on par with the best tunes of Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda, and I had a sig here for months that was about this game.
Grand Prix 2: my first game of the series, played so many championships and the best game of the series overall, I'd say.
Pro Evolution Soccer: unfortunately the series hasn't had a good next-gen game yet, but it absolutely rocks in the PS2 form.
Skies of Arcadia: my first RPG, and the first and last great RPG for the Dreamcast. This game was so well made, had amazing scenery and sweet graphics, a good story and was very captivating with good characters. I was devastated when I lost my save, I had 48 hours logged when I accidentally erased my memory card
. This game was also released on the PS2 but had some small additions to it.
Other games I have to mention are Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur and NBA/NFL 2k series, but they don't make the favorite list because of too many sequels hurting the story (SC), and gameplay issues with NBA/NFL 2k (I don't have next-gen stuff though). Also, Skies of Arcadia was a mighty fun game and a very good rpg! Shame the fate of the Dreamcast killed it.
