Microsoft Sidewinder FF Problem

yo gang,
having some trouble with my steerer at the mo.
i duont know if it is just plain worn out but the downshifter is playing up. It seems more electrical than mechanical as sometimes it works fine, then other times its very inconsitant. i can approach a corner click down 2 gears and nothing happens, then as im drifting wide (no engine braking as im still in 6th!) it will shoot down to 2nd gear or something and lock the rear wheels up solid so i spin!
as i say, somethines its fine, then sometimes its just a sod!
anyone had simular experience?

First things I would try are making sure all the wires are plugged in fully (it may sound odd, and 99% chance this wont be the problem, but I'd always check anyway), then try reinstalling the drivers for the wheel. If that doesnt work, its probably something in the wheel itself.
