This is probably from trying to run 16bit games on win XP/2k, a possible way around it is appcompat which you need to manually install for 2k (not sure for XP) or you can grt a dos emulator like DOSbox. I could be totally wrong though :)

I just want to get it working without having to reboot everything.

Ah yes, 3 easy steps to solving this (I've had it a number of times).

1) Find someone with Windows XP Home or Windows 2000.
2) Find their 'Autoexec.NT' file in system32
3) Copy it to your PC. It will not overwrite anything.

For whatever reason, this file was not included with Windows XP Pro. Always helpful to have a backup of it though, as Windows 'Disk Cleanup' sometimes deletes it again.

Trust me, I've done this many times before.

You don't actually need to find Windows XP Home CD, as Windows XP pro has that file too by default. It's just that some program has probably deleted the file from your Windows/System32 folder. Here's what you have to do, and you don't need any Windows CD for this:

1. Browse to "%windir%/repair/" (usually "C:\WINDOWS\repair";)

2. Right-Click and Copy the AUTOEXEC.NT file

3. Browse to "%windir%/system32/" (usually "C:\WINDOWS\System32";)

4. Right-Click inside the window and Paste the file

Getting the file off from CD works too, but I think this method is easier. :)
