As you can see from the title, it's not an easy thing to search on google and I couldn't find much pertaining to this, so I was wondering if anyone else knew:

Remember in XP you could drag-select files in explorer and it would select them differently depending on whether the box intersects the file names (eg if I have 10 files named a.jpg, b.jpg etc; and also 10 files name a-001.jpg, b-001.jpg etc) and I drag select with a box from right to left it would first select all the latter ones, then the short ones. In Win7 it would select them all simultaneously. The XP feature is extremely useful sometimes.

I'd give you a screenie, but I haven't got XP handy atm !

Is there any way to force Windows 7 to do this ?

No idea. I'd imagine they removed it as so few people would have used it. ;)

Try one of the free Explorer replacements. Directory Opus does it (which I use), though that's very much not free, but it is brilliant.
