I was just wondering what internet security is the best right now? I have been using Kaspersky for a while but found it's starting to slow down my PC...

Thanks,
Iain.

Microsoft Security Essentials is the best free security imo, but it doesn't scan d/ls AFAIK.

I use a mixture of three:

Microsoft Sec. Esse
HijackThis
Anti virus addon for Firefox, can't remember it's name off the top of my head

Norton internet security is the bets

Norton Internet Security is a virus worse than the ones it's supposed to protect you from.

Best internet security? A router with a built-in firewall and stop visiting porn sites.

If you need to visit sites which dish out free malicious software, then NOD32 for antivirus.

+1 to Gav.

I have been using NOD32 for a while now and have no issues with it, uses very little system resources to :) I use the firewall on my Netgear Router.

Just stay away from "dodgy" websites and you will be fine 99.9% of the time!

Internet security - the perfect example for an oxymoron.

Very true, I had an older version of Norton that left 11 GB of junk files on my PC. Took me ages to find it out, now some of my programs run twice as fast. No way I'm buying another subscription after that. Now I'm using Avast (free antivirus) and a firewall with no problems. Whatever you do, keep Windows, your browser and Adobe Reader up to date as these are what a lot of viruses exploit.

I ran with no antivirus/antispyware for 3 months.
At the end of that time I scanned with various AV programs / spyware and wall it could come up with was a few little cookies.
No serious threats at all.

Because no one bothers to write viruses for WIn 3.1 anymore.

I lol'ed ;)

On a more serios note, ESET internet security (Same people who make NOD, just their AV+Firewall package) They do student prices too :). For free I swear by Avast as a free AV, and on the pc's where I don't have an ESET licence I just install Avast and use windows firewall (There's no data on these machines, its only a media centre so if it gets infected i just re-image it ;-)).

Microsoft Security Essentials @#$%& all over the other free anti-virus software (Kaspersky excluded, which you can get for free in the UK if you bank with Barclays).

Isn't MSE just a re-branded and *slightly* improved OneCare? At least that's what I've read...?

Edit: Actutally after some reading MSE looks to be pretty good. Good detection rates and low on resources. I'll have ti give it a try sometime. Some interesting comparisions on AVComparitives here. In the Feb (On-demand Comparative) test avast scored in their Advanced+ (Top Tier) category, but only managed the Advances (2nd Tier) award in the latest (Retrospective/Proactive) Test, What suprised me was the scanning speed of avast (I've ways known it was pretty fast, but it's not half bad compared to most of the paid products.)

Kaspersky is the best for me!, ever since i got it i havent switched and it fixed a lot of problems my pc had... before i used to format my drive like every 6 months... now i donwload everything, watch porn everyday, use P2p programs, etc and haven't format my drive in 3 years
if you're having problems just upgrade to 2011 or uninstall and reinstall it again

perform a full scan every 3 months... make sure to do it late and leave the pc on overnight as it takes time

imho anything other than KIS is a downgrade and yes, Norton is a virus lol

How does it rate next to NOD32?

Thanks for all your replies btw people and Dave, you did make me laugh with that one :)

Prefer NOD32 myself (but then that's what I'm used to), but Kaspersky is probably 2nd best. Get a trial of the latest NOD32 and use one for a month then try another. I'd try MSE too as it's got such a simple interface you can't go wrong - install, update, turn off scheduled scan, leave it to it.

Detection rates don't mean much by the way. They detect existing viruses, so ones that have been live for months - it's the speed at which new viruses are picked up which is probably more important, and I've no idea if anyone tests for that, and the abilities of the heuristics scan.

I was under the impression that MSE was based on their relatively new enterprise-intended ForeFront suite, which is highly regarded in itself. Looking at our WSUS update list they share the same databases it seems.

Gav, I think you are Right, perhaps now they will ditch windows defender, and start shipping pc's with MSE. As for updates all I can say if Avast updates its definitions every day (and I have know it to do two updates in one day!), as for how quickly the new viruses are included in those def's - I've no idea. Anyway I will give MSE a shot. Perhaps ill do a fun little test with two VM's and loads them with all the crap I can find lol!

I doubt they will ship MSE with Windows due to the inevitable anti-competitive law-suits.

They might offer it in Windows Update optional updates (as they do with Live Essentials or whatever they're called).

When installed it disables Defender automatically.
