Yup, the airspace over Denmark is closed.

It's only after we've lost everything, that we are free to do anything.

F**k Volcanoes.

RAF Condor next door sent up 3 jets this morning. Presumably to see if they fell out of the sky.

As I posted in the F1 section, the last time this volcano erupted of similar magnitude and style in 1821, it kept on erupting for 2 years. So yeah, airlines are possibly kind of screwed. They're already talking about having to be bailed out by the government here in the UK.

Apparently the MotoGP round in Japan next weekend might be postponed as well...

Other people who could end up getting screwed by this Volcano are the global warming conspiracy theorists. If this erupts hard enough for long enough, it'll cause global cooling(it's got some way to go yet of course, but weirder things have happened). Then all this moaning over the last few years from some people that we're "facing armageddon" from uncontrollable temperature increase or whatever will look as silly as I thought it was from the start.

...yeah, and this long overdue Ice Age cycle that has been shown to have patterned the earth all this time.

Yes, and some of the significant dips in temperature worldwide in recorded history have been associated with volcanic eruptions, purely for the ash reasons.

By the way, the volcanic ash cloud now has its own Facebook page, with over 5000 fans already. Meh, predictable I guess. :P

It needs to intensify just a touch more. I think you should read up about Toba. The crater is 100km long according to Wiki. Compare that to the minuscule Eyjafjallajokull crater, which is 3km, or that of the neighbouring Katla volcano of 10km. This is a teeny little volcano with just about zero consequences.

Yep, that would seem to be the equivalent of if Yellowstone Park blew its top today, for example. I was allowing for if Eyjafjallajokull erupted for a year or so, as seems possible, and assuming a global cooling even then of less than 0.5 C. So yeah, I was using the terms a bit... loosely ;)
And I know one serious concern about this is that it could trigger an eruption of Katla.

And the Hekla has started erupting as well.

I think there may have been a misunderstanding, Iceland. We don't want ash, we want CASH.

Fortunately this seems to be false rumours that have turned into news -
