NVidia 9600GT - which DirectX?

Got Windows 7 now. Can my 9600GT run on Directx 11, and if not, which version would be best suited to it? I read a report that it doesn't even support DirectX 10.1, but this can't be verified anywhere else.

Any advice on this?

Appreciated!

DirectX 9 would be best suited. DX10 is slow for most games and your card is hardly the fastest anyway.

Thanks gav and kaid.

That review is for the 512MB, while I have the 1024MB, would that make a difference?

And indeed, if it runs slower on DX 10, what is the use to run it instead of DX 9? Was it a case of fixing of what aint broke - as usual?

Or does it improve graphics, not the performance thereof but rather the looks?

And DX 9 is compatible with W7? Says so on the download site, but would like to know what you say.

Thanks again.

the higher direct x you have the better as it improves textures and general realism. to be able to run dx 11 you need either one of ati's 5000 range or nvidias gtx 470 or 480.

directx is fully backwards compatible, so no need to install an old version.
ergo: you can install dx11 and run dx9 mode

It's to add more features to allow programmers more options for increasing detail. DirectX 10 wasn't very efficient at it though, so it was rather underutilised. DirectX 10.1 went a little way to rectify that and DirectX 11 is a further enhancement both in terms of speed and added features - particular with tessellation (see here for an example of what tessellation can do).

So I can install DX 11 even on my unsupported card and still run it on either DX10 or nine mode, is that what you're saying???

Or, if DX9 keeps me happy in terms of gfx detail, no need to look at 10 or 11, as there will be no performance gain, and in fact loss of speed?

Thanks again.

You can install the latest version of DirectX and graphics drivers on your computer, yes. It will only allow you to use the features which your card supports though.
