A rant about this abhorrent spit of land

So last month, we were woken at 3AM by a group of kids aged about 18 ringing the door bell asking for the key to the house next door, which we thought was empty. Obviously we refuse and return to bed. Then my next door neighbour does actually leave and gets in a taxi and goes on holiday. Then we're woken up again at 4AM by the same kids ringing on the bell and holding it down for two minutes until they get the picture that nobodies going to answer and they bugger off. There was no remorse, whatsoever. No "sorry to wake you, but..." or anything, just "we need the key to next door, just give us it".

Police came by which time they had gone, situation is forgotten about. These kids know the girl who used to live next door but was thrown out (her grandparents look after her and she stole from them, so they threw her out - she's now living with her mother who has a mental illness and cannot look after her. I will hasted to add that although she is catalyst in this, I've never actually seen her with them and she's never personally done anything to us).

Anyway, couple of days ago my Dad hears a bang, thought it was my Mam coming in and chose to ignore it. Ten minutes later my Mam gets in from work and says she saw the police chasing a kid down the street. So they look outside and the little @#$%& had come onto our drive and kicked my Dad's wing mirror off. It's a taxi and due for it's taxi inspection next week so he had to get it fixed quickly at extra cost. The police caught this kid, who was drunk and over 16 so they can prosecute him. Except, the hilarity of our laws mean that even though they were chasing him because they caught him vandalising somebody else's car, because the police didn't see him vandalising our car they can't prosecute him for the damage caused to our car unless he specifically admits to it. Which of course isn't going to happen.

The police themselves are totally useless. They refuse point blank to share any information with you (even though it's your property which has been vandalised) and won't tell you anything. We sat there telling them problems we've had in the past and how we thought they were linked and they just sat there filling a form in and the next thing they asked was what the postcode of the house was. They never mentioned or referred back to anything we were saying and they didn't write anything down except our details. They have no care whatsoever for what they're doing and to be honest come across as being rather uneducated and for lack of a better word, thick.

The problems don't end here, with the police. I live opposite a school. Like many schools in the UK now it is being totally refurbished and having extra buildings build and stuff. The council came and scraped the speedbumps off my road to allow the heavy vehicles to move rubble away more easily, which is fair enough. They then proceeded to not do it right and leave holes in the road which have disintegrated into rocks the size of your fist which have ended up being thrown up by passing vehicles onto people's parked cars and damage has been caused, the council aren't interested in hearing about it. The icing on the cake is that last week a lorry drove down the street and a lump of rubble fell off the back of it and hit my neighbor's car, smashing the windscreen and putting a dent in the roof. Because the council workers didn't see it happen the council won't accept responsibility for it and they had to pay themselves to have it fixed (a bit like my Dad). El oh el.

At risk of sounding old here, I'm going to say that this is just not right. The whole country is going to the dogs. I've always been critical of people who slate the government and who hate immigrants and asylum seekers just because they're allowed into the country because I don't think these people really have any clue what some of these people have gone through and how little they actually have, or how little they seem to know about politics.

But recently I've seen and heard some things which have made my blood boil. I am in no way a racist person, I recognise completely the benefits many immigrant families have brought to the UK such as doctors and medical staff and also there are those with a good eye for business. I've always stood by the government's decision to help people in a worse situation than me because if I was in their place I be needing all the help I can get. But this "help" the government gives them has now begun to adversely affect the working class people (both british and otherwise - that does not come into it).

For example, if immigrants and asylum seekers have children when they're in the country, they are automatically allowed to stay indefinitely and are given a council house. My mate's dad also has a taxi and he said he picked up a Bangladeshi couple who were talking to him saying that they have only a month to fall pregnant or they will not receive additional benefits. What the @#$%&? Where is the morality in that? The list goes on... alcoholics are now given a weekly alcoholics allowance... to spend on alcohol. Drug addicts are given free drugs which cost a fortune to produce. If a spoilt brat kid runs away from home they can get given a council house with their rent paid for them. People at home on disability are given more and more money each year and many are totally abusing the system, layabouts who have no interest in getting jobs because they can live comfortably enough on the dole that's given to them. I see them sitting in parks and on trains drinking while I'm out actually working my ass off only to have a sizeable chunk taken off me to fund people who have absolutely no desire to work an honest day in their lives.

I've had enough, I have every intention of jumping ship to another country once I've got enough experience to be offered a job somewhere else. I am not usually a complaining person in an era where many people are worse off than me but the current government has left me so disenchanted and disillusioned about living here that I now honestly feel that the hard working and honest tax paying population of the UK get NOTHING in return, whereas red tape and human rights is giving far too much to those who do not deserve it.

I'd have to agree with you on this one

I'm filipino, my parents came to london around 30 years ago and i was born here, so technically i'm british.

the time of grown up here, all 26 years of my life, i've seen a massive change in the uk.
growing up, i was kind of the odd one out, you had white kids, black kids, but not many from anywhere else. i felt no racism growing up, as we were brought up in a kind of golden period, no one new of terrorism, the world was finally opening up to each other, and it seemed as though everyone was getting along.

but over the last 10 years, i''ve seen a direct influx of immigration, from africa, asia, eastern europe and this has led to alot of things going down.

they tend to get benefits like moving to the front of the queue for council houses etc, which mean the tax payer has to fork out more and more.

but this isn't solely the problem of immigration, you've just got some downright lazy people here too, look at that family in liverpool who said their daughter was missing so they could get reward money, things like this are shocking.

dont get me started on those freeloading mp's, they could be the worst of the bunch!

its something that cannot just be rectified over night, how to you address a problem like this?

the taxes we pay are ridiculous, i cannot see where my honest money is going.
the only thing that i appreciate is the nhs, i've been lucky enough to not need to go often, by i appreciate free health care.
the amount of money the goverment has from taxes is incredible, why can't they build more prisons, i for one think the nation will benefit as a whole if we lock up all the crap on the street. that enables people to go about their lives and achieve their goals instead of worrying about a bunch of shady kids hanging on the street corner.

the one thing that baffles me is how can one sweet innocent child, grow up to be a complete retard? the parents need a slap, and this all stems from education, we need better schools, if they are educated well enough and taught family values, then their kid is going to grow up and live a prosperous life, instead they get neglected and end up doing some crazy @#$%&, this then leads their children to do the same.

we need to focus on the rough areas, try to promote growth, encourage them to turn things around and lead them away from a path of destruction.

and what about the war in iraq and afgansistan?
how many billions are being pumped each year into that? what a waste of time.

the income tax is retarded, what's the point of trying to make better of yourself, reach the top so when you start earning serious money, you get taxed 40% on it

how are people able to afford anything in this country, housing is too expensive, when i was growing up, when you were like 22 or 23, it was expected of you to move out and live on your own, if you plan to do that now, you would have to be making around £35,000 a year to do so.
from all the guys i grew up with, only a handful have moved out. rent is over the top, you can't get a mortgage, and we're living in a life of debt.

why spend money that's not yours?
if you've been brought up well, you'll understand the value of money and to be responsible with it, now people are in so much debt, they live for superficial things, because of they are being brainwashed to think that they need them by the media.

this country is a joke now, i'm happy that my parents will retire soon and will return to the philippines where they invested their money well and can live off their hard work here.

i for one can't wait for the opportunity to jump ship and make a proper life for my own, there are no opportunities here anymore, there are no jobs.

everyone is competing for the same thing why?
because you can get an A grade for getting just over half of the answers correct in an exam.

what happened to the days when an A was 90% and above?
you can now get a B for 50%, they all say grades are increasing, and year in year out beating new records, but set them a @#$%& goal, make the grade percentage properly and the businesses and universities can distinguish the best and help contribute to the economy better.

and what the @#$%& is london doing with the olympics?
it's great for the capital, but the transport service sucks, there is traffic everywhere, you've got these stupid unions that go on strike every year and disrupt everyones lives.

i can't see it being a success, it'll be so expensive to get a hotel room for tourists, if you think the cost of living here is bad think about the people coming over for the olympics.

rant over.

i know this is just a bundle on non coherent mess, but i just had to say what i've got to say about the governess of this country.

oh and the bbc?
if you've heard on the radio, you need a tv licence to watch iplayer, @#$%& that @#$%&.
everyone is trying to squeeze just that little extra from you, no wonder you get all these benefits frauds, people just simply can't afford it.

car insurance, price of fuel, food, bills, everything is so expensive.

i'm making £20,000 a year, live at home with my parents, and it isn't enough if you want to lead a healthy and active life.

I'm upping sticks and moving to Korea on the 9th January for 4 months, hopefully i can find some opportunities there cos this place has lost its way.

i'm a londoner and proud, but enough is enough, its slowly going down the shitter.

You say that we need better schools. As a school teacher, I can say that schools are actually doing a damn fine job with the resources they've got available, but the resources are dreadful. Why is so little money given over to education by the government each year? Why are children growing up with a Nintendo Wii at home, and yet still using a computer from the 1990s at school because the school can't afford to upgrade?

Anyway, I admit all of the above points have also crossed my mind at some stage.

I can best compare the state of the social strucure in Britain to being like a shanty house in a slum. The whole house is made out of trash which is not fit for purpose, but it IS a roof over your head. And if you try to change one bit of it, it's so poorly put together that the whole thing will come crashing down. All you can do is keep adding bits of reinforcement to the existing framework, to squeeze a few years more life out of it.

If somebody actually had the courage to tear the whole damn thing down and start again, IMHO society would benefit in the long-term. But the short-term pain would be so extreme, so anarchic, that nobody is willing to try.

That's the state of the nation as I see it!

You know what. I've got to agree with most of the rant that you had put into this thread.

It's such a steaming pile of crap at times with the situation on child policies. Now I'm 16 and I know what is right and plain downright stupid. The way that the country has been run and how lenient it has been has just been the downturn of this country that was well respected in the past. Now most people think of the UK and think "oh yes, benefits galore!"

You're coming here to get a better life not flinch money from the system!

I don't pay tax atm (Parents do but I'm not working due to me being in fulltime education), but the fact that they want to get money out of you at every point is ridiculous. I mean what are you meant to survive on? Bread and Water?

Onto policies regarding children, why oh why do you have to put a massive implications on how you treat kids? I mean take any asian countries or even this country in the past. You had a simple factor. Do something wrong and you're punished with a slap that's that. I've been on the end of that a few times and it's made me a better person knowing that it is wrong to do that.

Nowadays however is that you just even scold a child by telling him that you were in the wrong, there's a big fat case against you and you've got social services on you and that your whole career is dead and la la la. And on top of that you've got thick parents who'll believe the child over the teacher and MOST of the time the teacher is right. Only at times the teacher will be wrong.

And because of this, you have young barstools talking back to the teacher and having a mouth off with the teacher in the middle of the class just because "the student" is right. I mean haven't they been taught any manners?! And the fact that "You SHOULD ALWAYS respect your elders!?"

Another thing which pisses me off is the other point that you put into the thread which was on the people who live at home and steal from the system with disability allowances and then complain that there aren't any jobs available to them. It's fecking mental.

Now I know, I'm not British by Birth or by Heritage but just by the cardboard that is a British Passport but you should be contributing positively for the country that you live in and that you respect it's laws and it's citizens. You have no right to deface all that is British just because you're not taught manners or because you're not given enough attention just because your parents can't be bothered to tutor you on what is right and wrong!

Don't worry, there should be a rock hurtling at us at a couple million of MPH or so.

But hey, I bet you don't get near the same amount of problems from illegal immigration over there!

And thank god it is. Tell the people of Postville, Iowa that illegals hopping the border at will is a good thing; now that their town has lost it's number one employer because they were hiring illegals for less than what they should have. Build the wall, and build it now.

But this isn't the place for a long winded discussion on border control.

From what my many, many US friends in other forums post (and most of my online friends are from the US) Obama is going to sell America to Cuba anyway, so no need to worry about borders ...

Tax on alcohol's a bad idea anyway. 'nuff said.

I would pay the tax on it if I actually earnt enough to pay tax. I'd quite happily like to earn £12k a year, but I don't have a job despite me applying for 20-30 jobs a week and not getting the breaks I should be. The employment situation is laughable in my town because not only are the immigrants able to get a job better than I am, the employers will also rather employ school children, some of whom can't spell their own damn name, over somebody who's more qualified and can probably do the job better than them.

Why?

Because it costs them less.

Minimum wage doesn't apply to anybody under 16 still in full-time education. Even if NMW applied, who would you, as an employer, rather take on? Somebody who would cost you £3.57/hr, or somebody at £5.80/hr?

The worst part is, that employers were telling the schools not so long ago that they were the ones picking up this country and having to fill the education gaps, implying that schools don't do their job properly. Schooling can only go so far. If the pupil doesn't want to learn, how can you teach them?
