ebay dispute [Resolved]

Hi all just a quick one.

Bought an lcd screen for a laptop on ebay. Before buying, asked the seller if it would be compatible with my laptop (gave him all the details.) He said yes.

Got the screen, put it in, nothing coming up on the new screen. so put the old (cracked) screen back in and it works fine (so the video cable and inverter are fine.

reinserted the cables on the new screen numerous times. sent seller two emails telling him of the above. no response.

just wondering who do i have to hound - is it ebay or paypal? as never had a dispute before.

Exactly why I stopped using e-Bay.

Contact the seller saying you will leave negative feedback within 2 business days of no response (Monday thru Friday are business days). If no response, report the seller to e-Bay and leave negative feedback. The last purchase I had I left negative feedback after being ignored constantly and they right away replied to my feedback calling me a liar and blabla and that I never tried to contact them or reach a solution (which I had been trying for 4 weeks!). They then asked me to take down my negative feedback saying they'd ship me the proper item (PS2 controller). Originally they shipped me a Chinese fake one, after a month of struggle they shipped me an used one. Finally they sent me a new PS2 controller. Only after that happened I removed my negative feedback (and back then they could leave negative feedback too, cheating bastards) and quit using e-Bay.

For all your needs search around Amazon, you'll find more reliability and you can get by the same or cheaper prices.

Don't leave any feedback until the whole dispute is over.

Dude, you don't have a case there I'm afraid. It would be ruled that the seller could not make a realistic judgement on whether or not the hardware would be compatible, and you're a fool for taking his word without first seeking expert advice.

You bought something on the cheap, and it wasn't what you were looking for. It happens.

Giving up sure isn't the best thing to do, Locke. Seller said it was compatible, it doesn't matter how knowledgeable the seller is, he gave false information to get the sale. False advertising, fraud, it all falls in the same category.

Mate... I work as an IT technician in a school and have been opening/fixing computers for over 10 years.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L20. When the description in the auction says "Toshiba Satellite Pro L20 LCD screen" and the seller also says it that is what you go on. A mechanic buys a part for a car, he knows what the part looks like but he is relying on the description and the seller telling him the right thing.

Anyway, the seller in my case agrees the LCD screen i bought is faulty and am currently in the RMA process with him.

And you are the fool for jumping to conclusions.

"Mate" ... I studied Law for 5 years at Law School. So don't preach to me from my own textbook.

If the seller has told you something which does not fit the description (i.e. you think you're buying a 1996 registered car and it turns out to be a 1995 registered car) then you have a case.

However, if it matches the description of the product he is selling, and it doesn't work with your system, then he's done nothing wrong and is under no obligation to correct your little issue.

The only way he would be considered liable for your loss is if he was issuing his statement as a professional, i.e. if he is a computer technician himself, or someone who would have expert knowledge of the field in which he is giving advice. Then his advice would be deemed negligent.

From the information you have given, it seems that you've asked an average Joe a technical question, and then trusted his answer with no knowledge of his credentials.

More the fool you, if that's the case.

Would be nice if both of you stopped with the foolish "fool" name-calling, good god...

Locke, I understand the idea of a layman saying something is one way when it isn't, but when the person is the seller and the listing says it is for something and there's written confirmation from the seller that it does work, there has to be something protecting the buyer. False advertising seems like the easiest avenue to pursue here but with your 5 years of schooling you could actually list more areas that would protect rapid_f1 than I could.

the reason i took exception locke to you post was you assuming that "you're a fool for taking his word without first seeking expert advice". well i didn't need to take advice as i work in the field. as i say the seller has agreed the lcd screen is faulty.

you may know law but seems you know nothing about IT. you say "However, if it matches the description of the product he is selling, and it doesn't work with your system," well it wont work in any system as it is faulty?? what part about that dont you understand? if you buy a washing machine from currys and you take it home and it dont work are you just gonna sit at home and say "well they said its a washing machine in the description".

sent screen back to seller - replaced with another, the replacement is working fine now. opened up a paypal dispute - escalated it, paypal found in my favour. seller refunded cost of postage also.

Glad to hear you've got that sorted. So often in situations like that, the sellers seem to manage to get away with selling dodgy goods.
