Hey Guys

I just started my computer up and when I got to the windows log on screen and i entered my password and logged in. However, it came up with a big error dialog box saying "Explorer.exe failed to initialise" and then it brought me onto the desktop with nothing working. I opened up task manager and selected run from the file menu and started up firefox and googled it. It gave me a load of things which I didn't get, but it tell me to just start it up manually. And So I did.

It works but what's the problem with it? :S

Hope you can help

Thanks

Monil

Oh btw

Using a XP Pro, IntelC2D 6750, 2GB RAM, Gigabyte MoBo, ATi Radeon 1950Pro

Update 1 - AOL Spyware finding a Trojan named Khollah every 5-10 minutes. I've checked it's record of scanning and its found it twice today and once on July 17th.

Update 2 - AOL Spyware found it again at 12.43

Update 3 - AOL Spyware seems to be blocking it periodically. Like it has happened from 12.43 then 13.15 then 13.30 and so on. Avast is still scanning

Googling "Khollah" shows something like a Win32 Trojan.

If it is a virus or trojan which is causing this problem then there will be other problems which haven't surfaced yet. You've only noticed the Explorer issue because it is the most frequently used executable in the system. Who knows how many other files have been damaged, but if you repair the component which is causing the issue with Explorer (it's unlikely to be explorer.exe itself), chances are you're just going to be playing catchup.

Just restore from your latest backup. If you don't have backups, then it's time to start and this is your lesson learned.

Oh, and stop downloading dodgy material.

Monza972 I heard the worst. I'll have to restart the whole thing. But there's no way in hell I'm going to do that until I find out all the other ways

Monza972 I should start preparing for the worst then :\

It could be lupus. Get a CT and an LP.

So anyway, just for a try I tried Malwarebytes.

And its cleared it right up, I did a quick scan with it and within 2-3 mins it found around 12 infected files. I clicked removed on them and it asked me to restart the pc. I did and the pc booted up without any problems. AOL even did it's daily check at 12pm and it also found nothing but just found some tracking cookies.

Thanks for the idea Ralv585

I've never recommended it. Never used it as I've never had to.

The best way to stay clean is to download your porn from trustworthy sources. Sensible people just don't get infected in the first place. ;-)
