XP has been showing its age for a couple of years now. Thankfully 7 is designed to work on low-end hardware such as Atom-powered netbooks all the way to 16-core behemoths (and presumably more). It's far better than both XP and Vista - quite remarkable for what is essentially a tweaked Vista.
How is support for Solidworks in VMWare, Virtual PC or VirtualBox? MS have released a beta version of Virtual PC for Win7 (which comes with an XP image I believe), but I guess there's nothing stopping you from installing Vista in a Virtual machine either. Virtualisation has come on a long way with Server 2008 (and thus Vista and 7), so you might get some acceleration.
Not ideal, but certainly worth a shot. Personally, I'd just tweak 7 to appear more like 7 if that's what is holding you back.
