Are there any blood donators on this forum?

I just yesterday donated blood for the first time. I had been thinking for a long about going to donate blood, but never actually made the final decision. Sometimes when I had a possibility to donate I had a cold or something else that prevented me for donating, and sometimes I was just too lazy.

Then yesterday morning I promised to myself that I would go to donate blood that day, if I would pass my dogmatic history exam. I knew we would get the results of that exam during the day, and I was quite sure I wouldn't pass it. Well, I ended up getting fairly good marks on it after all, so I had no other option than going to blood donation clinic straight from university.

Will definately go to donate again when I'll be allowed after few months.

I went to do it the other day. However my parents told me I had a blood transfusion when I was a little baby! So that rules me out I think! A shame because it is something ive wanted to do.

Also, apparently you can do it, go have a few pints and its a much cheaper night out :p

I tried giving blood, but they need to contact my GP as I had a heart operation about 20 months ago.

A few years ago I was told I was too skinny to do it lol !! Should be allright now, but bloody final year of uni is unletting in its persistence to rob me of any semblance of free time ( yes it's a bit hypocritical typing this in a forum during my spare time!!!)

I found it quite confusing that it's completely voluntary here, in most other countries you get given a bit of dosh. Not that it discourages me but it's just odd..

I donated blood in August 2007. After that I was given 9 bars of chocolate ,a Snickers and a day-off at the workplace.
It was my first and last time I doanted blood. I found out that hypertension (which I have developed) prevents me from doing it in the future. After the process I felt as if I was stoned. It was as if somebody hit me in the chest with a hammer then I felt dizzy and started to see black spots. It was anamazing feeling, anyway. I would have done it again hadn't it been for my illness.

It's completely voluntary in here too.
They say if they gave money for donators, that would make people to give away blood only because they get money for it, and that would make quality of the donated blood worse. Then people would give false answers to pre donation test questions, to be able to donate even though they actually wouldn't be eligible.
It's actually a law here that it's not allowed to give money for blood donators.

We can eat some snack and drink special coffees for free at the donation pace though.

I drank about 1 litre of orange juice before the donation, and about that much again after it. I had a bit of an uncomfortable feeling after the donation, but some of that was definetely because I had drank so much.

Chet, that makes no difference, it's only if you've had a blood transfusion in the last couple of years.

the official leaflet i have HERE says that you shouldn't give blood if "you have received blood since 1980". But I don't think a blood transfusion when you were a baby counts because if there was anything wrong with it then it would likely have killed you. I would ring up and ask (helpline - 0845 7 711 711).

I do it. You get biscuits at the end. Win.

ive also wanted to do it, but when i was 2 years old i too had a major operation. i had 75% of one of my kidneys removed, but i don't know much else.

i guess i should phone and ask. always wanted to do that, someone may just have saved my life once upon a time.

I got me cup of tea and a biscuit even though I didn't give any!

"A pint? That's very nearly an armful!"

After getting a massive electric shock the other day, and being thrown across the room by it, I was pissing blood. Okay now though. :-)

There are roughly 200 countries in the world right now. If your starement was true in way over 50% of them blood donating was compulsory. How do you know it? In my country it isn't ...

They can have whatever they want when I'm dead - I'm a registered organ donor and carry a donor card.
