In fact, Sol will never explode. It will expand into a red giant, give off all its energy and then collapse into a white dwarf.

Thankfully, this is more than likely NOT going to affect your summer holiday.

Ah, ok. If it does blow, it'll take 5,000 years for the light to reach us. But the thing that got me was this sentence:

...light would take more than 8 hours to travel around the star's circumference, as opposed to 14.5 seconds for the sun.

When you think of how big the Sun is, you begin to realise that you are dealing with incomprehendable sizes. Awesome.

that is awesome indeed. another figure to compare: distance earth sun = 8 (or 6, not 100% sure) lightminutes
