Okay so apparently Ukraine has some dept towards Russia so the whole Carpatian area's gas source is basically closed.
Here in Hungary the country's households' 80% depends on Russia and we currently have enough for like a month. And whatsmore we provide for Serbia now as they didn't have any to spare.
We already had the work day for this Saturday postponed to 28th March and until this afternoon there was a cogency 3-day holiday planned for next week (though this was made void as it's against the law by the way :D )

I actually can't believe this could happen in the 21st century...

The whole world's got problems these days, Dell have just cut most of their workforce in my home city (Limerick) today. 1900 jobs gone in one fell swoop in a city of 70,000 is not a good thing. :(

Indeed, but I wonder what happends if the gas "crisis" reaches Western Europe too.

I was about to suggest charcoal tablets or eat less beans but then I read the topic. It wouldn't have been quite right. ;-)

Slovenia is in the same boat, no Russian gas from yesterday, but we apparently already have enough gas till Monday allround(industry).
It's freezing outside, we still have heating , we get some Algerian gas as well, but basically have one month of reserves as a Slovenian company has it stored in warehouses in Austria and Croatia.

/well I obviously hope it gets resolved for all countries affected by this.

To me it just feels that since Putin changed his role and the current guy came in, Russia have taken a very bullish approach to so many things... it's like a midlife crisis from having "lost" the Cold War

It's quite bad in Bulgaria as well, we've had huge hot water and central (government lead) heating shortages. Most schools are closed and street lighting is non-existant which doesn't help people's opinion...
Russia is simply showing a small bit of what they could cause if they really decided to turn the pressure on (or off as is the case...) and perhaps to get Western Europe to listen a bit more closely...

We're talking about a country which (allegedly) sanctions the assassination of one of it's own nationals on foreign soil. Russia is very much the same danger it was before.

I'd argue more of a danger. They seem quite intent on flexing muscles more frequently. Hopefully that's all it is.

They have been more dangerously active, but what's happening in the middle east is an even bigger danger (especially the US's administration seemingly willing there to be a war)

Currently EU observers are in Kijev to check the dealings between Russia and Ukraine, and Gazprom has said that gas forwarding can be begun even tomorrow.

this is what happens when you dont invest in researching alternative fuels....It will only get worse with other limited natural resources.

Isn't the UK increasingly relying on Russian gas? If they can do this with the ex-Soviet states, who knows what they can achieve with the West...

ex-Soviet states?
I hope you mean Ukraine of the mentioned countries only.

Cause Slovenia, formerly of The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, wasn't even in the Eastern block - much less a Soviet state - as with leader Josip Broz Tito, Yugoslavia was neutral during Cold War and became one of the founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement.

I thought most of the Baltics relied on Russian gas. Or was that a wrong assumption to make? ;-)
