from [www.microsoft.com]

These are the Microsoft minimum hardware recommendations for systems that will be running the Windows 7 Beta. These recommendations are specific to the Beta release and are subject to change.

Windows 7 Beta recommendation:
1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
1 GB of system memory
16 GB of available disk space
Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme)
DVD-R/W Drive
Internet access

Note: Some product features of Windows 7, such as the ability to watch and record live TV or navigation through the use of "touch," may require advanced or additional hardware.

Right, I'm using IE7 and I keep getting this: It's so frustrating!

Windows 7 Beta Download Center

Please wait while the Download Manager begins your download.

If you have not already installed ActiveX control or the JavaTM applet, an information box will appear in your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser prompting you to install "ActiveX control:...".
If the Download Manager can not install the ActiveX control or the JavaTM applet in your browser, you may have system restrictions.

If you have system restrictions, please:

Download products using the Web Browser method (How exactly and where?)

Contact your organization’s Administrator to download products using the Download Manager method

windows 7 was fun for 30 min and then the problems started. After installing the chipset drivers suddenly my keyboard and touchpad didn't work anymore. It also wouldn't recognize a extern keyboard. So back to vista and installed ubuntu as a dual boot :).

P.S.

I have a realtek soundcard and it worked fine on 7.

I'm guessing you came from XP?

I wasn't just surprised that Creative drivers worked, but the fact any drivers installed using compatibility mode. Usually that combination is a delicious recipe for BSOD pie.

I've got the X-Fi Gamer too but after some fiddling did manage to get 5.1 sound working. Set your speaker setup in Windows control panel to 2 speakers. Click OK and close the window. Load the Creative control panel from the start menu and select 5.1 speakers. Head back into the Windows control panel and select 5.1 speakers again. That combination got it working for me.

I have to say I'm quite impressed with Windows 7 so far. I'm posting this on XP, which I must admit feels a bit clunky now. Does anyone know what the 200 Mb partition is used for during 7s setup? When you partition a disk in setup it creates it for you. Basically, can it be deleted once it's installed?

Edit: Answered my own question :)

hhmm that works as far as testing each speaker individually, but then when i actually play a song in iTunes it still only plays 2.1

just tried 7. unimpressed... be sticking to Vista/Kubuntu here methinks. Most of my hardware is undetected (fair enough, it is a beta) so i'll go back and have a play and get stuff working and pass final judgement. Initial reaction is pure 'meh'
