PC issue

It just started yesterday, my problem is after 30 minutes my computer starts to make a sound, it sounds exactly like when I first turn it on. Its a click, then followed by like a jet turning on sound. I added more memory a week ago, but I don't think thats the issue and VISTA downloaded updates Tuesday night before it started but I don't see how that could cause a problem. And it seems to start when I'm on the internet and when it starts, everytime I exit a program my computer lockup/freezes. Does anyone know what the problem could be ?

Thanks

Sound like you computer is heating too much, the sound you hear could be a cooling fan spinning on full speed.

Check if you computer is dusty from inside, and clean it by blowing air.

I'll try that, thanks. Just weird because I cleaned it a few weeks ago. The sound today, come on stop for a second, starts again, stopfor a second, and continues to do that till I hold the on button down to shut it off.

It could be that your computer may need a new power supply. So if after cleaning it, it keeps freezing you should check with a technician.

What do you mean by a new power supply. A new powercord?

The power supply is what gives a computer its wattage, so if you have a computer with a power supply of 250 watts but you have upgraded it with video cards or other stuff that eats energy you could be pushing it too hard and the computer will shut down.

It's what you conect the power cord with and has a fan in the upper back of the computer. Your problem could be this or could be something completly different. So dont make any hasty decision without consulting an expert.

Power supply is the rectangular box usually near the top of the case (if it's a tower) which regulates the power to the different components within the case. It's the most critical part, as a poor quality one can cause instability, damage the other components and even cause most components to blow if it itself reaches a critical level.

Could you better describe the sounds please? Does it sound like a fan? A prolonged beep? Does the sound go away if your turn the speakers off?

The sound has nothing to do with speakers, its coming from the tower itself. It sounds exactly like when I first turn the power on to the computer. A click sound followed by the sound of a jet turning on (I geuss a fan turning on) And like yesterday, it was fine for 30 minutes and then it started, stoped for a second, and continued to do that til I held the power button down to shut it off, because I could turn it off normally because everything froze.

I don't get that though. A "click" could be anything (but most likely the hard drive starting). The jet sounds most PCs don't make. Even on the highest fan setting most modern PCs don't get up to that sort of level, except with Pentium 4 Prescott processors on motherboards which aren't aware of their thermal envelopes.

Some graphics card do spin up quite a bit and then settle down 5-15 seconds into the boot process when the drivers are loaded. I wouldn't call them jet-like though, merely a bit louder than normal. What graphics card do you have?

You're going to have to be more specific, as at present I have 6 different components in my head which could be causing these problems, and even then the loudness might not even be related to the instability, but be more of a side-affect.

It´s not the CD/DVD rom drive is it? Mine starts up at random moments sometimes, and sounds like what your describing. Except it shoundn´t freeze the computer.

How may Hard Drives do you have? Could the sound be a hard drive spinning up?

Mate, do you have a camera?

Record the bit when you start up your pc and then upload it here. it should give us a better understanding of what you are trying to say

@gav, the graphics card is a NVIDA GeForce 7900 GS

@Peat, I have 1 Hard Drive

@airefresco, I don't think its that because the sound is different from when I put a disk in.

@Monza972, I don't have a camera

I'm going to clean it tonight and I'll let you know as soon as I can if its working right.

Seems like it just needed to be cleaned, ran smooth for the 5 hours I had it on. Just it had problem's when I first started it, so I did a system restore and its fine now. Also, when cleaning it, can it make the computer shut down quicker? Because everytime I go and click shut down, it only take 2-3 seconds to shut off, it never shut down that quick before, even when I bought it brand new it wasn't that fast.

whatch out if the problem occurs again find the right noisy fan and oil the bearing a bit, if it's the video card it can go as far as damaging the gpu if the fan isn't turning properly

*Digs up old thread.*

Gav im after some advice pretty please :)

I managed to get 99% of all my new pc parts only to find the motherboard is fudged (not that i care too much, will teach my dad for buying a crappy Jetway one lol!)

So does this motherboard look ok? [www.ebuyer.com]

I don't have loads to spend but this seems an ok one?

My other parts are a Athlon X2 5000+ Black Edition, 4GB DDR2 800Mhz, ATI Radeon 3870 512mb, 250GB Samsung Spinpoint 8Mb Cache, OCZ Stealth X Stream 600watt and the usual sata DVD-RW, Vista X64 etc etc.

Cheers,

Matt.

Edit:// Forogt to add PSU.

As if others can't give advice too. ;)

It'll be fine. Their 780G, MicroATX version of those boards is renowned for being one of the best available for any platform, so I'm quite sure that one will be just as solid.

Just make sure you've got a ATX-sized case. :)

Hehe, Gav you've suffered from instant freeze-dry typecasting I'm afraid. :) You might have expressed an opinion once about computers, and therefore you become the one and only forum authority on computers. It's in a similar vein to...

- RedSam is the only forum member who understands politics;
- DaveEllis is the ultimate font of knowledge on NASCAR;
- sasjag is the man to ask about practical jokes;

etc.
