Get your affairs in order, it's the end of the world!

SCIENTISTS are trying to stop the most powerful experiment ever – saying the black holes it will create could destroy the world.
Dubbed by some the Doomsday test, it will be carried out next week in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located 300ft underground near the French-Swiss border.
The machine is 17 miles long and cost £4.4billion to create.
When its switch is pulled on September 10, this atom-smasher will become a virtual time machine, revealing what happened when the universe came into existence 14 billion years ago.
New particles of matter are expected to be discovered, new dimensions found beyond the four known, as scientists re-create conditions in the first BILLIONTHS of a second after the Big Bang.
The atom smasher ... the 17-mile-long machine that some fear will destroy our planet.
Experts even predict that millions of tiny black holes will be produced — baby brothers of the monsters gobbling up dust and stars at the heart of the galaxies.
That is why boffins are now trying to stop the project with a last-ditch challenge in the courts.
They fear the LHC experimenters are tinkering with the unknown and putting mankind — and our whole planet — at risk.
The group responsible for the experiment, the European Nuclear Research Centre (CERN), says that these mini black holes will vanish as quickly as they are created.
But the anti-CERN brigade accuse the scientists of playing God, warning that no one can guarantee that the black holes will not survive, rapidly growing in size to suck the Earth out of existence in an instant.
But CERN, which includes several UK scientists, say their work is vital to unlock the secrets of matter that forms everything known in the universe.
In the experiment, atomic particles will be fired in opposite directions along the 17-mile long underground ring — the length of the Circle Line on the London Underground.
They will travel so fast that they make 11,245 trips around the tunnel every SECOND.
From the collisions, boffins expect to discover a fundamental bit of the atom, called the Higgs boson, that is expected to exist but which has never been seen.
Professor Otto Rossler, from the Eberhard Karls University of Tubingen in Germany, is one of the scientists mounting the legal challenge at the European Court of Human Rights against 20 countries which are funding the project.
He said: “It is quite plausible that these little black holes will survive and will grow and eat the planet from the inside out.”
A CERN spokesman said: “It will not be producing anything that does not already happen routinely in nature.”

Finally, at last! The end to all my troubles.

I love the world endings.

Me too, world endings are so much fun. I'm planning on having a bit of a picnic in the garden, some cold chicken, a bottle of wine, I'll have my telescope out for a bit of last minute star-gazing. I'll head into town tomorrow and spend all of my money. Not like I'll be needing it. :-)

the court of human rights has already ruled that the experiments at the lhc may start on september 10th. and you will see nothing will happen...
oh and thank god i´m not studying at tubingen. that would be embarassing.
at least i went to the spa gp weekend before worlds end ;) oh yeh i should get my backpack, youll never know where you end up when you get inside of that blackhole :P

Purleeeeeeeeeeze, there's a reason the Sun's a joke in this country! ;)

you could read that in almost every newspaper
It's when people assume the worst regarding physics. The worst us physicists did in the past 100 years was discover radiation! ;)

Another waste of money. Spend on something useful, whatever happened in the past happened. Get over it ;)

Well it will be interesting to see what happens, although nothing will happen anyway, there could be significant tense during sept. 10th, much like it was with millenium bug

if mankind had ever argued about the usefulness of experiments we would still live in caves. if you take into account that scientists from all over the world can acces and use the lhc (so we only need one) the amount of money spent on it seems ok to me.
if they really find the higgs boson we might get an good idea how many dimensions the universe really has. it could be the proof for some important theories.

So what if there were 5 or more dimensions then?

btw i like the ads on this thread :p

"Trulli was slowing down like he wanted to have a picnic" LOL
If there are more dimensions than just 3, there might be more efficient way to travel through space. Just imagine a box and an ant. And that ant thinks there are onlz two dimensions, he than assumes that in order to go to the opposite side of the box he needs to go all the way around. But if you are aware of the 3rd dimension, you know that going through the box is shorter way (under persumption, you do not have to dig a tunel or something...)

that is a good example. the funny thing is that you never know what you can do with the results before you actually have them. that´s why many people can´t see the usefulness of science.

for sure it is, but as i said reports about the legal issues were in almost all newspapers. the whole story shows again:
1. some guys simply want attention.
2. many people utter their opinions without having the slightest clue what is happening at the lhc.

edit: of course i don´t think of any forum members here, that goes towards the guys that started that legal issues

The Sun newspaper is Britain's most successful newspaper by a significant margin because it's run as a business which does excellent market research and presents itself pretty perfectly to a target market. The stories contained within it are seldom accurate representations of the truth but they are readable and interesting. They're in the entertainment industry, masquerading as a provider of information, but nevertheless everything written in there is true. It's just that important bits have been left out. :)

I don't believe there's any chance the World will end on Wednesday, but then I would also have been part of the crowd that rubbished claims that the Titanic would sink. I would have told you that man would never land on the moon. Stranger things have happened...
