"Nice car, 6 gears suck though I think, too much choice (unless you have a really powerfull car, but even then, you probably won't need the highest gear, or if you want to drive economical, the 3rd of 4th). "

Well the point of six gears in normal cars is the fuel economy. The sixth gear acts as 'over'gear, so you can drive on lower revs at normal travel speed.

As Ville said it's for economy. Driving in 3rd or 4th won't give you better fuel consumption, and neither will driving slowly. Unfortunately in the UK at least, we live in a world where the slower you drive the safer and more economical you are. For economy you're best driving between 40-50 mph for small cars, and around 50-60 for larger cars depending on your gearing, and how many gears you have. So called gas guzzlers can actually give better fuel consumption than small cars too. Put 4 people in a supermini, fill the boot and go down the motorway at 70mph and your average probably wont be too far off that of a car with a much bigger engine that does 2000rpm totally unstressed. But, as we know, we live in a country where one rule must fit all based on seemingly no knowledge :(

Anyone having any trouble with the new 2% ethanol fuel? My car has started coughing and spluttering since filling up on sunday.

Cant be sure that its to do with fuel though, but its been getting progressively worse since i filled up.

nothing to do with the fuel mate, since most cars built within teh last 10 years were designed to work with up to 10% ethanol

It is fairly gay, 2 fingers up to the n00bs who came up with that rule if you ask me ;)

You can still get contaminated batches though......

Anyway, its odd, when cold its fine, but when up to temp its starts spluttering around 1800-2200rpm which makes pulling away VERY undignified. I hear the TDC sensors on clios can get corroded but if it was a timing issue i would assume that it would splutter on idle and under any revs....

It's not going to be an Audi because I don't like German cars in general.
Too pompous... ;)

You can be almost sure you've had the 2% ethanol in your tank before. The stations would have started selling it before the date I'm sure to avoid having some stock that doesn't contain it.

Do they have to declare at the pumps what percentage of their fuel is "green"?

That car should be a Automatic.. And A 520i Isnt really fast.. The fun begins with a 530 or 535.

@ Sapo, The A4 is in the same range as the 3series.

@Il Dottore: indeed officially it's A4 vs. 3series and A6 vs. 5series, but both the Audi's are quite a bit larger than their opponents.

And why back for a BMW to a, what is it, Alto, Cuore?

50 euro's? ;) Guess your living in some peasant area then? ;) (Groningen, Friesland, Brabant, Limburg ;)) As I cannot possibly imagine that car is legal/able (APK etc) to drive? ;)

You'll quite often see 'may contain up to 5% ethanol' written on the pumps, especially at supermarkets. I know Tesco source their fuel from so many different locations it's basically a big mix. The 'may contain' really refers to if the supplies contain fuel from a company called Greenergy which use ethanol in their mix. Tesco 99 for example gets its 99 RON from the fact it contains 5% ethanol.

Well, mine isn't. Don't know why though.

No car should be an automatic unless you can't physically drive a manual ;)

58mph is the most economical speed to drive at in general (based on fact that all cars have gearing set to their torque band). well that's what our lecturer said anyways... he is a bit weird

Mine is supposed to do 45mpg at 62mph. It doesn't it's a lie it'll do 35 if I'm lucky but it's more likely to be 32ish.

I'm still amazed at how such a small engine can eat fuel at the rate it does lol

Almost exactly the same as my actual Celica, except I have a slightly different front bumper without splitters at the bottom and clear repeaters - and scratched up rims :(.
