Colin McRaes Helicopter has crashed - RIP Colin and Johnny McRae

I'm not the biggest rally fan, but McRae's death is truly terrible.

RIP Colin.

There's no confirmation on his death yet so I'm witholding from the obituary just yet but, if true, it would be a terrible loss. McRae was "my generation", he was the driver who first got me hooked on rallying back in 1995.

that's what i thought. someone else wouldn't be flying his helicopter, so in all likelihood he was in it :(

unless he's away somewhere on a mountaineering expedition and doesn't have any mobile phone and no way of knowing the news, he would have reported he was safe and well by now, or his family would have told the media that he was away somewhere remote.

it's still such a shock, it was the first thing i thought about when i woke up today.

Yea. Also what I wud like to beleave that he is testing his bmw somewhere in desert.. But I guess hope is gone. In my opinion he was one of biggest racing stars ever. RIP

@Gaulty: 1995 champion

Kimi, so, Massa Fernando Sebastian is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood that message?
Official confirmation came at 1255 BST. RIP

Colin, His son, His Son's friend and a family friend.

HORRIFIC. really upsetting.

such a shock to hear, I read it on BBC news last night and it just said a helicopter crashed near his house, but I was still shocked to hear it confirmed that it was him.

RIP

Dave Richard's chopper has crashed on the way back from the Belgian GP too. Both he and his wife "walked from the wreckage".

STATEMENT ISSUED ON BEHALF OF COLIN McRAE’S FAMILY

Speaking on behalf of the whole family, Colin’s father, Jim McRae, said today:

“It is with much sadness and regret that we have to make this statement.

It is unbelievable that Colin and Johnny’s lives have been taken so prematurely and in such a tragic manner.

Colin was a great son, a loving husband to Alison and a fantastic father to Johnny and his big sister Hollie. Johnny was a great wee guy, spending every spare minute with his dad, and even at this early stage it looked like he had the potential to carry on the family dynasty.

Our thoughts are also very much with the families of Ben Porcelli and Graeme Duncan. Ben was a great buddy of Johnny’s and they had always spent a lot of time together both in and out of school. Graeme, who now resides in France, had been a close friend of Colin’s since their schooldays and was back in Lanark on holiday.

We are thankful for the overwhelming number of messages of support we have received from all around the world. Colin was very much an inspiration and role model to motorsport fans the world over.

As you can imagine this is a very difficult time for the family and we would ask that our privacy be respected and we be allowed to grieve in private.”
