In January or February, I don't remember exactly when.

The car was an old F-1600, built back in 1984.

In the background are the exit of Senna's S and the entrance to Curva do Sol, and far away it's possible to see Descida do Lago - I was practicing heel-and-toe on what was Turn 1 of the old layout.

Entering Senna's S.

Crossing the Start/Finish line

Going down Senna's S - there's a camcorder on the car.

My fastest lap was a low 2:25. I could have lapped much faster, but I was afraid of crashing the car and having to pay for the damage later. ;)

PS: There are another 45 pics and a 55-minute video. :)

Awesome! Nice to see the old turn 1 too, even so little of it. Proper corner. :D

A few more pics:

The cockpit...

...and the pedals.

Day 1 - Sunny

Training heel-and-toe on the old Turn 1.

100 meters to Senna's S.

On Senna's S.

Day 2 - Wet

Less than 100 meters to Senna's S.

Recovering of a spin (;)) on the exit of Senna's S.

Entering Curva do Sol.

The rain fell before the sunrise (about 6.00 am) and it was around 9.30 am - the track was still quite wet.

Entering Ferradura (the corner where M.Schumacher crashed during a friday's practice session in 2004)

P7 was the best I could do ;) (no, I didn't stop the car for this pic)

After a lap ahead of me, showing the racing line, the driving instructor (yellow helmet/red car) was checking whether I (red helmet/yellow car) knew the racing line or not.

After one lap behind me (the lap started/finished on the exit of Curva do Sol), the instructor overtook me and we went to the pits. When we arrived there, he got out of the car and told me that he was very impressed because people usually take 10 or more laps to do a decent line, and I did only one lap and managed to do an almost perfect line :).

Leaving the pits after the mechanics gave a little boost to the engine - the track was drying.

How did you go about doing that?

It was my 'Xmas gift. For [irony]only[/irony] R$3000,00 (that's about 1100 euro, or 1470 dollars), I've had four theoretical lessons (healthiness tips, why to heel-and-toe, how to enter a race, how to get sponsors, why you'll never afford being a racing driver without sponsors ;) etc.) and four 50-minute practical lessons (lesson 1 - heel-and-toe, lesson 2 - free practice, lesson 3 - learning the racing line, lesson 4 - 12 timed laps).

PS: I forgot to add - I'm now a licensed racing driver. ;)

That doesn't sound too bad, may consider it once I'm back in Brazil! Either that or do some F1 laps in France, who knows ;)

I'll be sure to send the Interlagos track stewards some VT Galleries.

Congrats Lex. :)

Despite the street tires and the very low rear wing angle the car had good grip (more than a road car anyway). I did not push the car to the limit because I was afraid of crashing it, so I can't tell how much grip the car really had.

The brakes were quite good. However, I was more worried with correctly doing the heel-and-toe than with the braking points, so that's another thing I can't really judge.

The seat was very disconfortable. The headrest was way too forward. Adding that to the thickness of the helmet, my neck was forced to be in an almost 45º angle with my column, what caused me some pain after leaving the car (the adrenaline didn't let me feel this pain while I was driving).

The 1st and 4th gears were a pain in the *** to select. The neutral position of the shifter was between the 2nd and 3rd gears; moving the shifter forward gave you the 3rd gear. Moving it left and forward gave you the reverse gear. Between those two positions was the 1st gear. There was no way I could select it, but, as it wasn't used in any corner, it wasn't such a problem. The problem was with the 4th gear. On the last 2 timed laps (= after driving for 90 minutes = when I was really tired ;)) I missed it quite often. That's because in order to select the 4th gear, you had to move the shifter back (from 3rd gear to neutral), move it a bit to the right and then back again. It happens that there was a spring that pushed the shifter back to neutral position when you do the neutral-right movement, and, after driving for 90 minutes, your right arm just doesn't have anymore the strenght necessary to beat the strenght of the spring.

Anyway, it was fun. :)

how strange that one fo the first things you were taught was heel and toe?? I am a racing instructor and thats normally one of the last things people get taught, you need to make sure they can drive consistently first, racing lines, apex's, exiting corner...... but i suppose those are the differences from country to country.... looks good though, i'd like to drive a few more interesting circuits. good luck with your racing

Perhaps they consider heel-and-toe part of the basics; "you can't expect one to corner well if he doesn't know how to properly reduce speed to enter a corner" or something around this.

I'd like to upload the onboard video of the last 30 or so minutes of day 2 but I don't know how to convert the DVD files to a .mpg, .wmv etc. format. Does anybody know how to do it?

hey instructor your teaching are good, but its not always the best choice to be a good racers..you doesnt really need most of track to follow edge by edge or whatsoever but those apex u mention is helpful.and you u say carefully exiting in corner why should u be carefull its a wide road you can roam on it not just on a side;)

Hey Lex, you probably had a wonderful time.

I drove on Interlagos this year also (on Canada Grand Prix day, I watched the race at Interlagos).

I drove a BMW Z4 at the 4 Rodas Magazine event. It was just 3 laps, but it was really nice. Changing gear with the buttons like on an F1 car was really nice.

Nothing like the experience you had, 90 minutes and a F1600 car.

It was about one hour and 45 minutes on two days; that's three and a half hours. :)
